Newbie...How would you fish this?

Featured Replies

The last two or three days of weather have been hot and overcast which is leading up to rain and thunderstorms tomorrow. Weather now is 81 degrees and its 6:30PM so the sun is getting ready to go down. I'm fishing a canal that is about 1500 feet long with two pockets on it, I guess you would say, like a cul-de-sac on a street. I would say the average depth is six feet, with a lot of grass and a little bit of weeds on top, also a few rocks here and there. What should I look for, and what baits would you recommend to use? If this kind of question is always asked, and I could find the info somewhere else, please direct me. I don't mind reading/buying a book to read so that I don't post a million clueless threads on here. Thanks!

You might think about tossing a swimbait. The 6" BBZ-1 in either floating model or slow sink has a lot of potential. These large swimbaits draw big bass like nothing else can - sometimes!

Fish the following, the order is not terribly important:

Crankbaits

Topwaters

Buzzbaits

Spinnerbaits

Plastic worms

Creature baits

Swim baits

Drop shot

Senko's

Tubes

Frogs

Lipless cranks

Jigs

Spoons

C-rigged soft plastic

As soon as you catch a fish on one of these, continue to fish that bait and attempt to catch another.

That is all.

You really don't need to buy any fishing books. A Bassmaster or In-Fisherman subscription wouldn't hurt, but the best info you're going to find is online, and there's a lot of this site. Check out the Fishing Article in the upper left.

I would recommend you look for irregularities in the cover. Something out of the ordinary that will concentrate the fish; one type of weeds meeting another, a depth change or hole, a weed edge, docks, rocks, wood, a hiding place, an ambush point, a clump of cattails in the middle of a lily pad patch. Stuff like that.

Lure choices could be just about anything, depending on the thickness of the weeds. But since it's shallow and sounds weedy, I would say spinnerbaits and buzzbaits on the edges and in the more sparse cover, and frogs, toads, and Texas rigged Senkos in the thicker stuff. Learning to pitch jigs and Texas rigged soft plastics might be the trick in the heavier stuff.

Good luck.
