Pond covered in watershield

Featured Replies

Alright i fish a pond with some monster bass and just a ton of fish in general, but the pond is nearly covered in water shield (lily pad look alike), ive used top water frogs and jigs and such. But as soon as you cast 15-20 fish break the surface and swim off. There are pockets of dirt and grass that float up and they hang out in that stuff. What should i throw to get them to hit better. i thought about throwing a crankbait into open pockets and ripping it out.  or tieing on a swimbait.whats yalls thoughts

Try pitching a trickworm maybe junebug or watermelon-red or green pumkin. Don't know where you're located so I can't offer any more.

Good Luck,

To be honest I think I'd toss out one of those floating "Hardnose" Snakes by Manns.  They go through the thickest of cover with ease and yield hard strikes from big bass.

Most likely, there are a lot of lures that would work (worms, lizards frogs, plastic minnows, etc). I'd focus on making long casts in an attempt to go completely over the fish so you don't scare them off.  Then wait a good minute or 2 before you begin your retrieve and you should be ok.

I Fish a place that is exactly like you described. There a 2 presentations I like to use to catch these spooky Fish.

Next time after you cast and the fish spook, instead of reeling it back in, leave it there. Wait for about 5 minutes then slooooooly start to retrieve. Its quite painful sometimes, but I have found that for the most part the fish are there for a reason and will come back.

Or you can try the splash and dash, short casts, fast reeling to get a spooked fish to do a 180 and hit the bait. Sometimes this works great, and the strikes are insane.

Thanks for the suggestions will try it out and see, this pond seems to have potential. Have caught a 5lb er out of it, buts its ridiculous to see all the swirls when you throw your bait and for some reason i think that they are all small fish. They all seem incredibly healthy and fat and are deep green. just cant seem to get any more big ones to bite. Ive never seen stranger behavior out of bass. its kinda perplexing to fish this pond.

They could also be Pumpkinseeds or Bluegill as they will frequently sit right under the pads looking for any little bug morsel to fall in. Thus they are always looking up and can see the shadow over the water. You should try sneaking up on them before they spook so you can get a good look.

Places like this are great to keep you on your toes, and once you get consistent, its the best feeling in the world.
