The best thing to do is to respect the owner and ask permission. I guide a private lake on private land in NC and all the people who have tried to access the lake via the creek have been hauled off to jail.

Yeah. This is in NC too so the rules are probably the same. I have tried to get in contact with the owners but it is actually a company. They have never contacted me back.

Carlos, check with the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission for their input and follow what they say.

In Virginia you can get a ticket for fishing posted waters with out permission.  :'(

Why not just ask the property owner for permission to fish the private water?

Problem with this is finding the owner or person that actually has the power to say. A private land owner might give you permission, but you may break the law passing over restricted areas trying to get access. Or if he happens to have it leased, he may not have the power to even allow you due to legal wording in his lease with a corporation. Ninety percent of the land along the rivers in this area is owned and controlled by large corporations managing timber. You cannot legally cut off the river through an oxbow just to gain access to water you have been given permission to fish.

Our family has a small trac of land leased to a timber company for Forrest management(Clear Cutting). They cut every 20 years or so. Due to liability issues we long ago gave away our right to manage this trac. If i tell someone they can enter the land for any reason I have violated the terms of our lease. If you enter on my word and get injured i guarantee you you will sue our family, the timber company, and anyone else that has anything to do with it.

Guess who the timber co. will sue to recover any losses?

Timber co. main office is located in New York State. The laws where the company is domiciled will be enforced. Best of luck getting an ok to fish our flooded land, or any other land that borders the angelina river in East Texas.

same here i live in Indiana, and you cant use a hook over a certain size, the hook is small. this is only in some of the public rivers but i dont like it >
