how come you never find smallies

Featured Replies

why is it that small mouths live in lake but they don't live in small ponds?? i have smallies in a lake by me but i never see them in small ponds not farm ponds just the public ponds where all the ducks live and the bass don't grow big

I would assume it is because smallies require cooler water, and water with some flow in it.  Ponds probably get too warm and cannot sustain the environment needed by smallies.

I could be wrong, though.

I agree with Abel, but I don't think they need current, even though they are found in rivers and streams. Their need for clearer, cooler and deeper water is just not typical of small ponds. Plus they like rocks and gravel, again not a feature of most small ponds that I'm familiar with. I'm sure there's more to it, like food chain and other stuff.

Smallmouth need the same exact conditions as a trout.  Cold, rocky, current, clean, clear and warm only during summer!
