What are those holes under the smallies jaw?

Featured Replies

their are like a series of holes under smallies jaws....looks like holes if they were stiched or something

what are these holes about?

Those are mandibular pores.  They house the mandibular nerve.  Used to help locate and ID prey.  They work in conjunction with the lateral line.  I assume they help detect movement below the fish, like prey on the bottom.

They are often used as one way to ID a pike from a large pickerel.  Pike have a minimum of 7 and Pickerel usually have 5, sometimes 6.  Scales on gill plate are another way to differentiate between the 2.  A pike only has scales on the top half of the plate where a Pickerel has a fully covered plate.
