Stanley Jigs floating ribbit frog

Featured Replies

I bought some about a month ago and tried them out to check their action. The only problem is the "frog bite" is still about 5-6 weeks off here in south Louisiana. However, the action of the frogs are about the same as the regular Ribbits. The down side is that they are lighter and don't cast as far. The up side is that they can be stopped in the middle of a retrieve, like around stumps, and floated for as long as you like. Also, because of the type of foam-styled plastic that is used, the point of the hook won't tear up the lure as much as a regular type of plastic.

I dont' see the need for a floater. I like the original Ribbit just fine. It can be worked at a decent speed and still stay on top, plus as stated above, the heavier bait is easier to cast.

I'd assume they'll work just as well as the original Ribbit.  Overall though, I prefer the Bull Ribbit just because it's huge and any size bass will make an attempt at it, but it floats a little higher in the water than the 3 1/2 inch Ribbit because of its surface area.  The action on the Ribbits is awesome and the fish love these things when they're in or near vegetation.

If you like the bull ribbits, check out the seizmic frog they have a large frog that is also a high floater, its legs are smaller and displace less water but work well for stop and go retrieve.

How do these compare to the Zoom Horny Toad?  I was eyeing those up

Also, when do you guys typically use frogs (season, time of day, conditions, etc.)?

I fish the Potomac River quite often and once grass starts really growing into the river in late spring till where it starts dying out in the fall topwater frogs are on fire, i've had my best luck with the YUM buzz frog but i know of people that will only throw horny toads or will only throw the ribbit, honestly i havent heard of anyone having more luck on one than another and color really isnt an issue either, as many fish are caught on the white frog as the black frog as the green frog there might be something to the color and the condition but i've never found only one that will catch fish to me the topwater frog is honestly whatever you are confident with and catch fish with, something i did learn though when fishing them is that if you attach a plastic bead to the front of the lure it will make it more weedless and keep it on top of the water better.

One thing i forgot was that my best luck with them has been fishing on top of grass or in channels or cuts in the grass line mainly when the topwater bite is typically on early morning and about a couple hours before sunset when the fish are very active.

I tried the floating ribbit last year and didn't care for it, the legs don't have the action as the normal ribbit. They are too stiff and the bait is alot lighter. I also like the horney toad  mostly for pulling through heavy grass where the ribbit gets stuck, the horney toad usually slips right through.

Both are good baits for different conditions. I use em both alot.
