Cold Water River Smallies

Featured Replies

I'm planning on going down to the river tomorrow, but I have no idea what to try and where because it has been COLD.  I'm going to try maybe some smaller jigs or something but I'm really not sure.  I also do not know where I need to fish, I'm assuming deeper spots.

So if anyone has any tips on how exactly to approach this let me know.

Thanks!!

No matter how cold, jerkbait. And since you're river fishing, why not an inline.

the last time i was down to the river i caught a few on senkos, moving them slow in deeper water, also had 4" gulps and a dozen live minnows

Fish the eddy's along the bank in the deeper holes. Start at the bottom of the eddy and work your way up. Throw up river with a tube or hair jig, I like a 1/4oz in the winter and usually fish dark colors such as Green Pumpkin, Dark Melon or black hair jigs with a 101 pork trailer. Fish sloooooooooooowwwww. You usually will not feel a bite but, it will feel like, well, mushy or you will just lift up and feel weight. Really stick them, as well. Their mouth gets hard in the cold water. This receipt has caught thousands of nice smallies for me over the years. Best time is when the river is on a fast rise, as it puts them in the eddy's. If the river is on a quick fall, stay home and fool around with your girlfriend or wife, lol. Good luck. :)
