Jigs for creek smallies

Featured Replies

    Hey guys,

I live in southern tennessee and fish the elk and surrounding creeks fairly regularly.  Just recently I have started throwing jigs because the the YUM craw bugs just dont last that long with how fast and hard these fish hit.  I picked up some strike king bitsy bug jigs today at gandermountain.  I started with watermellon, green pumpkin, black/blue and a crawdad brown in 1/16th and 1/8th ozs.  Im looking for some opinions on what jigs yall use for river creek smallies and what size/color they might be.  Ive been using netbait pacachunks and crawpappis for trailers and they seem to be working ok.  But the trailer does seem to be very important in triggering strikes.  have I started out on the right track? Im hoping to hook up on a few here this afternoon and let the fish tell me how they work.  But any help would be appreciated.

Have you tried a plain ole' 1/8 oz. ball head jig with a 3" - 4" curly tailed grub? I've caught tons of smallmouth on these. Also, try fishing a tube once in awhile as well.
