Hi my name is Teddy and I'm new to this forum. I started making lures by whittling and I was wondering how many of you do the same? I use no other tools but carving knives or chisels. I'm pretty into it right now, looking for any tips or suggestions. Thanks in advance!

That's a very good start and proof you don't a expensive tools. I use a low tech approach myself and get by when it comes to shaping my baits. With "softer" woods like pine or balsa, it is not necessary to use too many if any power tools... but I ain't gonna quit using my dremel when I need too!

I also use sandpaper to help shape some things. So sandpaper and a hobby knife can do a lot.

A nice sharp Exacto knife works well for PVC. You must be very careful (ouch) not to "whittle" yourself.

Tried posting some pics but it didn't work out for me... I'm mostly on my iPhone which I'm pretty sure I can't post pics from but I also tried on the laptop and it wouldn't upload. I clicked upload multiple and it brought me to some page and I didn't see a place to upload. Am I missing something? Lol

After looking at all the lures you guys make on here.. I think mine look like a kindergarten craft project. =] pics soon hopefully so you guys can see what I mean.

I use a scroll saw for cutting out my blanks and a drill press for drilling the ballast weight hole. The rest is done with a knife and sand paper. This is my fav part of building baits. I love to see the wood turn into the shape I had in mind.

So hopefully this works... heres a couple pictures i took.. They are not perfect and every one i make is unique. Often times i dont even sand it down i just whittle it down until im satisfied then throw the hardware in and paint it. (Not with an airbrush either unfortunately)

That is pretty good. If you're going to make poppers, it might be easier to start with a dowel. I also have a low-tech method for shaping it with just sandpaper.

I'm from Maine... I got some dowels and sticks but this is only one of like 10 ive made so far.. I'm getting more into it though. I usually have my fiance paint them so they dont look like a 4 year old painted them... My painting skills need to be honed.
