Results from my Frog Test

Featured Replies

I just started fishing frogs this year. I bought a couple packs of Yum's buzzfrogs and had moderate success with them. Getting hits wasn't the problem, it was getting those fish hooked.

So I went out the other night with 3 new baits. A yellow Scum Frog, a Natural Color Bronzeye Jr., and a Leopard Bronzeye Popper. (I had fished the Jr. twice before).

I went in this order...Jr, Popper, Scum.

My first cast with the Jr. was a missed hit that I then caught a 1 pounder on a worm thrown right at it. A few casts later I landed my first frog fish of the afternoon and my only with the Jr. for the night as not another fish offered at it.

On came the popper which I was really excited to try. Frist cast, and first fish with the bait: A solid 2#. Over the next 2 hours I threw this bait and caught 14 bass ranging from 1-3#. At one point I threw into a spot and caught 4 fish in 4 casts and at another point I had a bass hit it 3 times while retrieving before he finally ate it.

The Scum Frog didn't get much time but I was able to get 1 small one off of it in the 30 minutes or so that I had it on.

I will definantly be throwing a few more Bronzeye Poppers in my arsenal the next time I see them on the shelf.

The popper. It's a killer bait.If I stress it it's because I want others to share the incredible success I have had with it too.

I was wondering how those poppers performed... great job

The poppers are fine for casting but suck if you want to skip them.  Being that most of my frog fishing is done skipping docks and trees, I don't care for them.

Hum, the Spro Popper skips great for me. The Scum Frog Popper is a little harder to skip though, but with practice it will skip.

I don't have a Scum Popper but might pick one up to try out since I'm sure the price is a little lower than the Spro's.

The Spro Popper seemed to skip for me just fine under hanging tree limbs and into tight holes of fallen trees in the lake.

When throwing the frog poppers what is everybody using for a rod(length/power/action) and what type of line and lbs test?

I believe I have 2 rods that could possibly handle this, 1st is a 6' 10"MH/XF with 14lbs fluorocarbon and 2nd is a 7' MH/F with 12lbs Yo-Zuri hybrid.  Or should I just switch one of them out to braid?

Later, :D
