Skimming A Pond Of Weeds

Featured Replies

I had a recent conversation with the owner of a local pond that I fish. He's been having a weed problem for the last several years and we were discussing ways to possibly clean the floating weeds and scum from the surface. The pond is several acres and a jet ski or small boat can be put in the water. We were trying to come up with something that could float on the surface and be pulled by the boat. This device might have small tines or something to catch the weeds and then be dragged to shore and emptied. The weeds don't cover the entire pond but there are enough to make fishing a real pain as every retrieve collects this junk and thus spoils most every cast. Any thoughts on how to clean this pond's surface?

If it was me i would first look into a more natural and longer lasting solution like say, sterilized carp or something of that nature. Skimming the weeds would probably turn into an every year deal and would cost more in the long run. just my 2 cents on the issue.

Check out pondboss.com, lot's of good info to get you going in the right direction.

The owner did put a dozen grass carp into the pond. We're just looking to get this slop off the top to speed things along.

I had thought about some pvc pipe, capped on the ends so it floats and attaching something to it to collect the weeds as its pulled along.

Talk to your local DNR, Fish and Game what ever it's calledin your state. They are usually good source of information.

If you stick with pvc, drill small holes along a side and drop a bead of silicone on each hole. Then throw in some screws or nails, it will resemble a rake. You can tie some small buoys to either side if needed. Ive seen this done with broom handles as well
