when to change the lure, color, depth, or size?

Featured Replies

here is something ive been thinking about, and would like some opinions.

if i start the day with a shallow diving crankbait, white for example, and dont catch anything, what do i do?  do i go with a deeper diving white crank, or a different color crank, or with a whole other lure?

if i fish a black worm, and get no hits, do i change color, size, or worm style, or go to a whole different lure first?

if i use a white spinner bait, and get no bites, do i change the color, size, retrieve, or another lure?

wondering what you do first if you get no hits, and hoe long you give each color or lure or retrieve to work before you try something else?

For me, a lot would depend on my degree of confidence that there are bass in that particular location. If confidence was high, I'd try another horizontal bait and a soft plastic or two. If confidence was low, I'd tend to move, but that's just me, I'm impatient.

I mainly stick to covering the three depths if the bite is non existing. First i will start with a top water plug or a shallow runner, then i will try a mid running crank and last i will throw a deep runner. Color is usually the last thing i worry about unless the water is very clear. I will try and find the fish first.

If I'm a fishy place and I don't get bit in ten casts, I change colors.  Last weekend I went through four colors before I found the lizard they wanted.

Usually when I don't get a bite on cranckbaits or spinnerbaits (at least two different ones with different actions, color, size) I go to a dropshot worm, it usually works for me.
