Bass Angler Magazine’s Editor-in-Chief Mark Lassagne met up with Bass Guide Aaron Lesieur for some small mouth fishing on the California Delta. “August is usually great time for smallies on the Delta the water is warm; but not too hot because it’s a river and the water is usually pretty clear, which makes for better fishing,” remarked Lassagne.

They hit the water early Wednesday morning, launching out of Vieira’s Resort with plans to fish the Sacramento River towards Walnut Grove and hop on over to Steamboat Slough. if the bite was slow. They had high hopes and said, “We’re anticipating a good day.”

The hit the Delta jackpot in numbers; but weren’t bowled over with size revealing they found “quantity over quality”.

Finding Crawfish

About half the ones we got were spitting up small crawfish, as they were being reeled, even the very small ones. The crawfish looked to be about 1 to 1 ½-inches long, and about the same color as a crystal craw speed trap, brownish-orange. Even though they were also spitting up the same color crawfish, all the fish over 2-lbs were caught on a Revenge deep runner ½-oz spinnerbait in silver with chrome blades Maybe, they were tired of crawfish and wanted a little variety. We saw a lot of bait fish, small minnows, mostly about 1-inch long; however, a couple laces had bigger minnows or shad and we did not catch any fish where there was bigger bait.

Bigger Fish

All the better fish came from deeper water 8 to20-ft slow rolling the spinnerbait. We got about 15 fish on it, 15 to 20 more on a 5-inch, watermelon red Senko and about 15 on a crankbait. Most of the crankbait fish were caught on a Jackall MC60 MR in crayfish color. A few were caught on a speedtrap and a couple on a Radar 10, all crayfish color.

Tide

The tide was incoming all day so the water was moving slow pushing the better fish out deep and suspending. The bite was better with fast water and move shallower too.

Wrap Up

Throughout the day we had hundreds of bites and many times you’d see fish nipping at your bait while reeling it in, not always small ones nipping; a couple of times I’d see a 3-lb’r bumping the bait all the while thinking it’s a 6-incher. With every good fish we caught, there was another one following it, the same size or bigger.
