A simple google search of "studies on released fish from bass tournaments" will give you a ton of articles to read on the subject. From what I've read years ago, some fish will return to their original capture site while others will relocate to suitable structure closer to the release site.

Biggest factor is that most survive the ordeal to still be catchable. That is a vast improvement from the days when fish where brought to the scales on stringers.

We call them retreads.

Those are the released bass you catch at or around the weigh-in sites after a tournament.

Studies have shown that the bass will do what is said above, depending on the distance from where they were caught.

I like to fish 100 yards to the left and right of the ramp where the weigh-ins have taken place. I have caught a nubmer of bass there as have my friends and others in tournaments.

Club tournament on Lake Chesdin in Virginia I lost a beauty at the mouth of the creek where the tournaments have their weigh-ins. Had the guy I was fishing with known to grab the ent I would have boated her.

Always fish these locations during the day.
