I've always fished w/ my drop shot hook pointing up, but saw a fishing show where the guy was ds'ing & his hook point was down.  I've not done it this way, is the hook ups better w/ the hook point down?

I couldn't imagine it helping at all.  Maybe this dude's onto something but I doubt it.

The only thing I could see, and this is a stretch, is that the hook up ratio COULD be higher.

The thinking being, that the lower jaw has more of a lip, making it easier for the hook to make that initial contact, and reducing the number of skin hooks.

For me, I will take that perfectly centered upper lip piercing any day of the week.

Ever try to lip land a bass with a hook in it's lower jaw? Hook UP....always!

I've always done it with the hook up.

I started using a circle hook for all my drop shotting this year and can't imagine going back to a J hook.  If you haven't tried it you owe it to yourself to do so.

BTW I try to get the hook point to ride up only because it seems logical that it would snag less this way.

yeah, that would be a stretch. I think their mouths are practically symmetric so I would have to respectfully disagree that their is more "lip" in the lower half.

I don't see any advantage of having the hook face down, and I have tried it.  If there is one disadvantage I have noticed, it's that if you let the bait touch the bottom, the hook's point grab the bottom, increasing the potential for snags or dulling the hook. In addition, the upside down hook looks ugly.    Hook up for me fo sho.'
