Any Hints On Carving Out Your Own Baits?

Featured Replies

i was just looking for some tips or hints on how to carve out your own lures..im kind of new at it so yeah..im looking to make a bait in the shape of a red eye sahd or a rapala cracklin rap.. thanks

Corey, there are lots of ways to do it, you just have to jump in. Most hobby builders cut out a basic 2D blank on a band or scroll saw and cut the lip slot while the blank is still square. After that, shaping begins. Some prefer a belt or drum sander, a knife, etc. I use a Dremel sanding cylinder. Taper the nose and tail sections and round over and smooth out the edges until you get the finished shape. Ending up with a symmetrical bait is important and that means shaping baits is mostly about control. I mark off the tapers, do them with a disc sander, then mark off shaping "limits" on the top, bottom, and sides with a compass so I can control the hand shaping. If you don't mark it off, it's easy to be fooled into taking off too much or too little because you are shaping curved wood surfaces. The wood grain will also tend to fool the eye.

thank you erick.

I like to start with clay. Any mishaps are easily fixed. The draw back is that clay prototypes are used for one piece molds.

I would start with a simple shallow running flat sided crank for your first bait. I use a wood carving knife and sandpaper for shaping my blanks. I have more control with the simple tools. Get you a wheeled marking guage for marking the center line of the bait and marking the areas to take off wood. Look at any of my theads with flat sided cranks and use 1 as your pattern. If you need to know the specifics like ballast placement and bill angle just ask. If your first bait runs decent and you catch a fish it's all over but

the crying. Welcome to the darkside.

What Marty said, the dark-side is nice........once you make the first crank bait that runs true and catches fish, look out. I'm more of a round type bait guy. In my opinion it's a little harder because of making sure everything is symmetric but that comes with time. Good luck.
