Hey all,

I currently use a 6.4:1 Lews SS. Going to be setting up a second rod with a Lews TP and was wondering what you all would suggest as far as ratios goes. My two rods are a MHF and a MF. I mostly fish lipless cranks, swimbaits, senkos and the occasional frog. Should I just get another 6.4? I'm not sure what would be the best for what I fish. I have a spinner I use for light finesse presentations.

The techniques you have listed don't require a gear ratio with torque. You could set yourself up with a 7.1 to 1 in case you find you might want that faster line pick up. The 6.4 to 1 is a great all around ratio unless you are deep cranking. Both my TP's are 6.4 to 1.

I'm actually struggling with this same question currently... I'm looking for a carolina, and jig setup and am 99.9% set on a 7.1:1 for faster pickup, but worry about the power for some of the beasts that dwell down there. For the baits you listed, 7.1:1 seems to be the right choice like f and p mentioned. Good luck and congrats on the new rig ;-)

Get a round reel instead of a low profile. Gets ya all the power you could ever want. Least that's my understanding of it.

Or you could go with a lower ratio and just reel faster.

6.4:1 is great with everything except deep cranks and in a pinch you could get away with it, it just is a little harder to reel. For baits that I use my rod to move the lure like worms and jigs I use a 7.1:1 and I now have a Quantum smoke 7.3:1, 34 IPT is fast! For jerkbaits and shallow cranks and square bills I like the 6.2:1 or I should say any ratio that is in the 26 to 29 IPT catagory and for most cranks I like the IPT to be around 21 to 23.
