Water Temperature Probe

Featured Replies

Has anyone run across a good water temperature probe that can be used to measure the thermocline(?) depth/temp?

I'm not too impressed with what I'm finding on the web, i.e. BPS, GM, Cabelas, etc. :( The two or three models seen most often don't get very good reviews. Are they out of vogue and not making them any more??

:Idontknow:

I'm basically a cheep Scott, so I don't want to spend an arm and a leg for something I seldom use. ;)

A meter instrument would be fine, I had one years ago that was great - so much so, someone liked it better than I did :(

Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers, Eric

I have never seen a hand held ones. I think they kind of have gone out of style for one reason. Every fish finder can read temp and depth now. You could do it like the pirates did for depth. Grab some robe and tie knots every so feet. Drop it over board and count the knots as they go through your hands. Then just get a temp prob from a pool store. That is the only answers I have for you.

Yes you can see a Thermocline at times if it's a strong delta and your electronics are set correctly, and the temp on a depth finder is only the surface reading, and that's great for a start; but sometimes its nice to know what's going on down below where the fish spend most of their time. IMHO

Over the years I have seen remarkable temp deltas in holes on tidal creeks where I thought the current would negate such a thing; I found the out going tide/current flushed over top of the colder water, and that meant a different habitat than the rest of the area. Fish can relate to a Thermocline just like they do to structure. I can see the suspended fish that I pass over, however, I don't have side-scan yet so I don't see the ones relating to the TC and a sharp drop on the sides.

Bottom line, I'm just nosy :)

Well I might have one more Idea for the temp then. I don't know about the range of them. I also don't know if it will go through water. We had one at a body shop I worked at. One time we were playing with it getting temps from all around the shop 100ft away. You can find cheaper ones.
