In A 3-5 Acre Pond Do Bass Spawn

Featured Replies

With the pond having a lot of blue gill in it the pond is over crowded. This makes it very difficult for any of the bass to reach a trophy scale. With this said the bass need a larger supply a blue gill. In order to get the bass to a large scale you will need to establish a good source of cover for them to breed and spawn.

In order to get the bass to a large scale then you need to catch and keep a smaller amount of blue gill and a large amount of smaller bass in the early spring to give the larger bass less compition for breeding room, food, and cover. If you keep a good amount of the bass out the pond then it will give the remaining bass room to express there full potential. Try and keep it proportional to the size of the pond. For a 3 acre pond +/- try and keep it at about 7-10 blue gill to every 1 bass.

Another thing that will greatly help is not fishing when the bass are spawning. Every time the male bass leaves the nest the blue gill waiting will quickly sneak in and eat the eggs. This isn't all bad though. But you still want a decent amount of young recruitment this means for every trophy fish that dies be it disease, predators, or you catching it there is another one to come in its place.

Just remember fish less when the dish are spawning, give the fish multiple good sources of cover(grass, rice, dead trees, and rocks), and keep some of the smaller bass out of the pond.

I have been doing this in my own pond for only a year and cought a 12lb bass, 10lb bass, and a 6lb bass this summer. Not to count the smaller bass and catfish.
