Baitcaster Casting

Featured Replies

I have a couple of Abu Garcia Black Max's that I absolutely love. I've been using baitcasters for about 2 months now so I'm still really new to it. It didn't take long to learn to cast. I've gotten down how to do an overhead cast perfectly and getting pretty good at left and right side arm throws. The problem I'm having is that I see a lot of people making underhanded throws to keep the bait flying at a low trajectory to limit the amount of noise, or to skip it into cover. I've browsed youtube for hours as well as looked at videos on here and I can't seem to find any information on how to make these low flying casts. I can find pitching and flipping all day long, but i'm looking for the underhanded, and under side arm casts. Does anyone have a link or know where I can find out how to do these?

Watch a couple fishing shows! LOL. Basically I'm just rolling my wrist. The rod tip makes a small circle. I didn't use it the first year I fished b/c reels because I had my spool tension set too tight to achieve any kind of distance. Then last year I adjusted spool tension just tight enough to remove side-to-side play and soon had no problem getting decent distance with an underhand cast.

EDIT: Search for different fishing techniques such as fishing with spinnerbaits. I watched one video on fishing spinnerbaits where the gentleman showed you how to make underhand casts off both sides of the body. Sorry, but I don't have the link. I do remember he fished almost exclusively with 3/4 oz. spinnerbaits.

Not sure I understand your question. Those underhand sidearm casts are pitching.

Well, pitching is an underhand cast, but not a sidearm cast. At least not how I learned to do it. http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xfwq6q_fishing-pitching-a-bait-casting-reel_news

I assume Kenneth is asking about what I also consider a roll cast. You are right. Might not be quite specific enough in the question. Two of us read it and came up with different thougts as to what he meant.

Its like casting side arm but instead of swinging from the side you swing from underneath in a little circular motion causing the bait to stay lower to the water and allow a quieter landing.

That pitching video was helpful though so thanks for that. Thats probably one of the best explained ones.
