modifying cranks?

Featured Replies

Does anyone change the depth or wobble of cranks or jerkbaits by heating and bending the dive lip, or grind off the lip in ways to change the action? I have been wanting to do some experimenting, but with the price of lures I can't afford to mess up too much. Anyone want to give up their modification secrets? Thanx.

i've heard of it being done, but never done it myself.

i would suggest if you are going to do it try using a heatgun to warm up the bill, instead of a flame. if you must use a flame use it carefully because it would be really easy to burn the plastic.

only problem with using a heatgun is that the heat is not as pinpointed as it would be with a candle flame, and the heat will be focused on an area about the size of the entire bait...

hmmm i dunno, give it a shot both ways i guess.

I've done some bending on polycarbonate lips. It will work (increasing lip angle) if you want a wider action. I don't have too much interest in increasing lip angles because I tend to prefer a tighter action.

I use a little torch or a lighter - you want to be careful......if you get the polycarbonate too hot it will bubble and discolor.

With all of the different cranks out there at every depth you could possibly need . Why would you want to alter  the lip ?

For the many you will ruin or could ruin, it would be cheaper to just buy the right baits for the job.

I have used a dremel and taken some of the wide portion of lips and thinned the bill, added coffin corners to some of my bills for deflection.

I also dress my lips when they get dinged up.    A dremel will smooth those lips and make them aero dynamic again.

Change a few hooks, split rings, add some red for gills, added some suspending dots, but now days, theres enough suspending baits on the market that do what you want the first time.     I'll buy a new bait.
