I'm looking for another inexpensive ($80 or less) spinning reel to mount on my trunk rod, and saw that BPS has their PQ spinning reel on sale right now for $50 (normally $70). I have a coupon for $10 off any purchase over $30, so it would only set me back $40 plus tax.

Anybody have experience with the PQ spinner? I was going to pick up an Orra S, but this seems like a better deal and would leave a few bucks in my pocket.

What do you think, is it worth $40?

Edit: Before someone comes along and recommends a Sonora, Sedona, or Sahara, I'm not interested in Shimano anything. Been there, done that.

I work on a lot of the PQ baitcasters and they're built decently sharing a lot of parts and tooling with Pure Fishing products. I'm not as familiar with the spinning models. The Pflueger President is a great bang for the buck ($59.95) apply the $10 coupon and you're only $9 off the PQ and know what you're getting. If you're curious about the PQ I don't doubt you'll get at least $40 worth out of it.

I appreciate the response. I've been using Pflueger reels for just about all of my spinning needs for the past couple years now, and the PQ would be replacing a Trion GX-7 that has taken a bit of a beating but still works great. I'm just in the mood to spend a little bit of money.

I know the President is a sure thing, and it's definitely on the list to look at when I hit BPS, along with the Orra S.

I agree, I love the PQ baitcast reel and I have two of the PQ spinning reels and they are good but not great! I would go with the President also. The older President ( wood handle ) comes with a extra spool. The new President ( rubber handle new this year ) does NOT come with a extra spool! Just a heads up.

I owned a President XT for a while, but the wooden knob on the "standard" President always turned me off. I can tolerate it on my Trion because it was so cheap ($30), but I actually removed the knob, stretched one of those neoprene pencil-cushion thingies over it, and trimmed it to length so I wouldn't have to deal with the wood. Wood does not belong on a reel.

Except a trout outfit. Wood looks sexy on a micro reel such as the President Micro or the Trion Micro.

To my knowledge the PQ Spinning reel is based off the Pflueger Arbor. The back to back angler of the year in our club has a few of the PQ Spinning reels and likes them.

It's similar in design and may share some internal components, but they're quite a bit different externally. The frame of the PQ models are substantially larger and they don't have the standard Pflueger spin-on handle. The PQ handles attach like Shimanos with the retaining cap on the opposite side.

Solid reel. my only problem is that its VERY heavy so my rig isn't balanced (paired with Quantum Kevin VanDam KVDS705MHC spinning rod ). something about an 11oz spinning reel that just aint right

They're a bit heavier than some more expensive reels, but I wouldn't go so far as to say they're "VERY" heavy. The PQ20 (comparable to most 2500-series reels in overall size, but not capacity) is 10.4 oz, which is only .3 oz heavier than the Shimano Symetre 2500FJ.

Definitely a bit husky, but not morbidly obese.
