Need suggestions where to fish in North Central Michigan.
Taking a trip soon from Detroit to Escanaba, Mi. and wondered if anyone might suggest where I can catch smallmouth or largemouths either from shore or wading. Rental car so no boat, just waders. Staying near West Branch and then Alpena. Thanks.

Fall Slab Baits for Bass
Very simple lead painted with single treble hook. Neither concave or convex. Unlike a spoon, there is less flutter when on the drop. They allow you to pinpoint locations. They are amazingly simple yet effective and cheap, less than $2.00/each.

Thank you. Great site. Seems like a great opportunity to exchange information. Do we have a link to subjects dealing in fishery conservation, i.e. catch and release, proper release techniques, perhaps successful efforts to improve bass habitat? Thanks.

Fall Slab Baits for Bass
A slab bait is referred to here as a simple lead mold that is similar to a spoon but does not have the action of a spoon. For purely vertical fishing I would be surprised if a spoon would not tangle in the line when it flutters down. A slab bait is so dense that it rarely gets caught up in the line. Thanks.

Fall Slab Baits for Bass
Thank you. I got to thinking about what I wrote and probably should have mentioned that nearly all these fish were hybrids, which we refer to as the cross between a striper and white bass. My understanding is they are a sterile fish that can not reproduce itself.

Fall Slab Baits for Bass
I am new to Bass Fishing Forum and wanted to try and contribute something before I take something. I have fished for bass for over 40 years and just recently purchased an adequate sonar/gps unit. Since owning it I was undecided whether it was worth the $ but my last outing proved it was. In combination with finding fish stacked up I made my latest attempt at fishing with 7/8 oz. slabs and could not believe the results. I've read several articles on slab fishing and tried it repeatedly over the past 60 days with little success. I now realize I was fishing structure and not fish. The presentation of the slabs when I found them was amazing. I returned 43 in just under 90 minutes and they were all from the same spot, which was in 18' of water at 55 degrees. I dropped the lure and let it lay on the bottom for 2-3 seconds, slowly raised it to where I imagined the hooks were all that was on the bottom, then would twitch it up about 6" and the strikes were quick but subtle. It's a terrific way to fish. I use braided 20# test on a MH Falcon. The combination of these two proved to have the needed sensitivity to detect strikes.

What does the error message, "you can't reply until you have 1 post" mean? I'm trying to get on to ask a question and the system won't let me do so. Sorry if this is elementary, but I'm new. Thank you.
