i've been using Seagur floro in 6lb test for drop shotting and on my shakey head rod. Been happy with it so far. I've heard the BPS floro is the bang for the buck and will try that this year. I use P-Line fluro-clear copolymer on the rest of my rods. 8lb is very good stuff and affordable.
My first experience w/ floro was using berkley vanish... it took me 3 years to even touch floro again... that stuff is JUNK... i must've broke off 10 sub-legal bass on the hookset! (8lb test)
looks real nice. The grips are sharp. i'd add some winding checks to really finish them off. Most spinning rods have the threads on the back as mentioned... i actually prefer mine in the front however so my palm is resting on cork and not threads.
What kind of blank did you use?
i use waterslide i got off ebay. I've had problems with the inkjet versions leaving waves in the finish... however a 2nd coat and its not noticeable.
I used the laserjet clear waterslide last time and i feel those work a lot better... it helps if you have a non-black background to put the clear ones on.
i have some pics but can't post 'em until i get a few more posts
only fished shafer a handful of times and never in the winter (cept between the lakes for walleye). I'd bust out the silver buddies and work main lake points near the river channel.. i'd suspect them to be suspended over deeper water.. Try the rip-rap on sunny days too, that should warm up the surrounding water.
i used to pull a 1448' jon with my old ranger (4.0l v6) on the bumper.. for a tin boat under 18', you're not talking much weight when compared to a glass boat, i think you'd be fine.
I also used to pull my 19' bass boat with a GMC envoy w/ a straight 6.. no problem.
Don't expect very good gas mileage though...
the whole east side of MI is good smallie fishing.. obviously erie and Det. River... Lake St. Clair for number and Saginaw bay is thick with them too.
If you're going after the BIG ones, Grand Traverse Bay on the west side in the spring time might be the place to be.
