  1. These threads are kind of funny because no matter what line you ask about someone is going to love it and someone is going to hate it. One person will say it's to stiff and stretches or cast bad, others will say it has no stretch, not stiff and cast great!, ;D Mike
  2. dodgeguy, I'll second that! Mike
  3. Actually we just discuessed this a few days ago, well maybe a week ago. Anyway there are several of us who love the stuff. I like the #17 Cajun Red casting on my casting reels and #12 on my spinning reel. Never have tried there lightening line but others have told me it's not near as good as the casting line. Mike
  4. Thanks guys but he sent it back to Abu this morning. The reel is fairly new . He has checked it out as well as he can ands can't find out why it's just not braking right. Someone mentioned it may be the magnets causing the problem. We will see when we hear from Abu Garcia I will post what they find about the reel. Thanks again, Mike
  5. They cast like crap??? I have never had a problem casting Buzzbaits or spinners. Unless they were really light weight spinners. 1/2 oz anything is not exactly light to me. The rod has everything to do with it and not just the reel or the guy doing the casting. Some people like to ride the spool with there thumb instead of just finessing it and some people like to lob the lure high in the air instead of snapping the wrest and following through with the arm and rod tip right to the intended target. Bottom line is that no one cast the same lure the same way so results will not be the same. I have watched pros cast a light weight lure a good ways out there with just the snap of the wrist and following through and I have seen some guys cast like they are throwing a hey maker at someone and it plops down 20' in front of them. Mike
  6. Mike-in-WV, 130' hummm 3' in a yard, that's only a little over 10 yrd. These guys need to go outside and cast a 1/2oz anything 10 yrd it's really not that far. You have a mechanical problem in the reel, I couldn't begin to try and say what it is without seeing the reel. I would get it replaced... Just my .02¢ Good Luck & Tight Lines..... He's sending to Abu this morning. The reel is definitely messed up because it acts as if it's free spooling no matter how tight he sets the brakes. Not trying to correct you here but 10 yards is 30' , not 130' . 3x10=30. He is really good and everyone around here knows it. As long as there is no breeze or wind he is really accurate also. Thanks again for your time and suggestions, mike
  7. OK guys, thanks. I'll tell him that he should not cast his Buzz baits so far and that will solve his problem even thou he has been doing it for years with no problems. ;D Thanks for all your help, Mike
  8. Not only that, but a buzzbait?? Over 40 yds? I guess I shouldn't question something I've never tried to do but I cannot imagine throwing a 1/2 oz buzzbait over 40 yds. Heck, not even close. A rattle trap maybe but not a buzzer. Thats like asking what weighs more, a ton of feathers or a ton of Cole? The rod and reel has no idea what is on the line but a half oz. is a half oz. no matter how you cast it. All I know is what this guys is capable of and I have fished with him for many years. This has nothing to do with the problem with the reel. He just thought some of you may have had a problem with the same model and may know what to look for so he wanted me to ask you guys. Mike
  9. Wow guys! I'm kind of surprised that you can't believe a 1/2 oz lure can be casted 120' ! How many feet do you cast your 1/2 oz lures? This guy has been at this for years and started when there was nothing but bait casters. He makes it look easy to me but the best I can do consistently is 100' and thats with #17 Cajun Red casting.
  10. Ditto Make the loop bigger to start with and after you have it over and around the hooks and skirts or whatever remember that by pulling on the main line that you will tighten the loop, then pull the short lead to tighten the knot and then pull both at the same time good and hard to make a solid knot. Also remember to always wet that knot good with saliva BEFORE you tighten it. Mike
  11. Quinn, I trim mine to about 1/16 th. After you pull it tight there is no way that tag is going to slip. ;)Mike
  12. Your right, that is a good distance but this guy can do it. He is going to send it back. It's a great reel and he loves it but something is wrong for sure. He did check it out and could find nothing wrong but he didn't take it all the way down. He will leave that to the Abu Garcia staff Thanks guys, Mike
  13. No different casting from shore then it is from a boat. Every now and then you get into some thick stuff above you in a boat when your trying to get to that brush pile in the water or a few stumps that are back in that little bay area. This is the reason for learning different casting methods as if it's second nature. Side arm, skipping, flipping, Etc. If your using a spinning reel you still have the same problems. , Mike
  14. A friend of mine bought this Revo Premier awhile back and it sure is a nice reel but it has been acting up for the past few days. He was casting a 1/2 oz buzzbait about 130' using #15 test of some kind with no problems at all and birds nest were almost none existent. Now he gets them all the time and it doesn't matter where he sets the brakes. He changed line and still has the same problem. He tightened the spool brake down with the knob so that the lure would not fall at all. Then he tightened down the magnetic brake as far as it will go and he still gets bad backlash. Any suggestions before he sends it to Abu? He paid almost $200.00 for this reel tax and all. Mike
  15. You mean there are other knots out there for fishing? Never mind, don't need another one anyway, the Polomer has served me well for a long , long time.
  16. The Silver Max is a great reel and it's really smooth casting and cranks as quiet as any other reel out there. Only time will tell how the new Max reels hold up but I'm not worried about any reel made by Garcia Love the clicking when setting the drag too. Mike
  17. Lol, My Dad would steal a little of my Mom's sewing machine oil. It worked great! At least it never caused any problems for us and the reels ran fine for many years., Mike
  18. Nope, won't hurt a thing but it will not hold as much line and he may loose a little casting distance.
  19. How frequently do you change your line? After every fishing day, every six months or just when you feel like it needs new line? Mike
  20. Thats a great Testamit to these reels. I had my Silver Max apart and it's well built on the inside too. Really a nice looking and smooth operating reel.
  21. "I thought that was why they invented spinning tackle." Spinning tackle, whats that? With my Dad it was either a flyrod or a casting reel ;D Had a couple of Mitchells in later years and loved them but it was just not the same feeling that a casting rod and reel can give you. Just my opinion anyway. My wife worked at Flugers when they were in Akron back in the 60's. They had one of the best reel and lure manufacturing company around back then. Raul, Lighter line helps me when it comes to light lure. Most of the time I'm using #17 because where I do most of my fishing is loaded with logs, trees and rocks just waiting for a hooked Bass to wrap around. Bringen them in fast is the name of the game. When using Rapals and lighter surface lures it's time for #10-#12 test and fishing on the outer edges of this stuff.
  22. Sounds to me like you made an excellent choice in equipment and you are about ready! welcome aboard and these guys are great and really helpful....even if some of them are from Texas, ;D
  23. Raul, Your right about that! I know why we need them and what they do and what they are for but you have to remember that we never had them in the good old days and many anglers did quite well without any of the gadgets. I was NOT one of them,Lol. My main interest here was to see how many people could get by without it and therefore get more distance. Not an easy task but with the right feathering with the thumb it can be done. Not something I would want to do in a heavy breeze or when I have one of them days when my brain keeps kicking out of gear. ;D
  24. Oh yes you'll need it....... Pencil Pusher, has a good explanation of the mag brakes. But I wouldn't set up any reel in the snow. The metals get cold, the oils get cold, and the grease gets cold. This is slowing the reel anyway. Wait until you get weather above the freezing mark, and you will have a different acting reel. Just my .02¢ Your right about the weather. I was out there a few minutes ago casting in the snow and I was only getting about 90' today compared to 150-160 the other day. Guess this reel doesn't like 18 degree weather but thats alright,....neither do I!! Mike
  25. As I have mentioned before I love both of my Abu Garcia reels and this new for 2008 Max series is really great! I just ordered an extra spool for my Silver Max this morning so I can just switch spools when I want to go from #17 test to #12 test. Customer service at this company is absolutely terrific. Polite people who will bend over backward to help the customers with any problems you may have, Mike
