  1. I checked out an Elite Tech just the other day. That "50/50" action is crazy. I think it might be too much for me. I have a goal this year to, pretty much, learn to fish cranks. I've been a plastic worm guy all my life. I'd try different things all the time, but that was my mainstay. Over the past few years, I've gotten more serious about the sport and have really tried to expand my knowledge and skills. This year, I want to learn how to fish cranks. I figured I should start out with a dedicated cranking rig. Well, dedicated in the sense that I would use it for crankbaits and spinners and chatterbaits too. I'm going to still keep things small though. Right now, I have a MH HMG that I use along with a MH spinning rig. That's it. I decided, a few years back, to dump all my old gear and rebuild. I planned to get a new reel and rod this Spring (l looked at 7' Techna or ETech Pitchin' stick) and use my current rig for cranks. But I know I really should have a good Medium rod for that. So I thought I'd put the new reel on the HMG and upgrade to a cranking rod. Was that too much information? Ha! You all just seem to really know your stuff here. I like the help. Plus, no one really understand how tricky decisions like this really are, except for other anglers. Right? For my level of fishing, it sounds like I would do just fine for my crankbaits if I stuck with another HMG. The Techna feels great and is a tad lighter, and I'd like to own one, but I'm not fishing every day. Heck, I'm not fishing every week.
  2. Who thinks the Fenwick Technas are worth the extra cash over the HMG? I won't say money is no object, but because I probably will never have a huge arsenal of rods, I want to make sure the ones I have are quality. Do you guys think a weekend warrior, such as myself, would feel that much of a difference? I plan to make it my crankbait rod. I have one HMG now and love it. I'm sure I'd be happy with a new 6.5' Med/Fast, but I figure I could wait and save up a little for the Techna if folks really think its better.
  3. Chevy and Cadillac are owned by the same company. I believe that same company owns Hummer and Daewoo too. So all that Jardin/Pure Fishing/Shakespeare stuff doesn't worry me much. The whole world is probably owned by ten corporations, once you boil everything down, anyhow. I have looked at those Johnny Morris reels at BPS. The Elite is more pricey than the Patriarch! So that doesn't help. BPS doesn't even look to carry the Patriarch either. Funny. Earlier, someone said "you get a great real either way". That was helpful. I'm sticking with Pflueger. Now, what do people think about Fenwick vs. All Star? Just kidding.
  4. "the patriarch is a pflueger. rule that one out." That cracked me up. I know some folks have had bad experiences with Pfluegers, but I have not. I learned to fish a baitcaster on a round Trion and I love my President spinning reel. I know I'd be happy with either reel, but I was wondering what others thought. I appreciate the input.
  5. Hello all, I'm going to invest in a new set up and it's going to be the Pflueger Patriarch or Abu Garcia Revo STX. But here's the thing, I'm a little crazy and my future rigs will all be the same brand. So that means, if/when I start getting technique specific, I'd probably go with quality rods and Presidents or Revo SCs. I've been planning on a Patriarch since last fall and have a couple Pfluegers now, but I had a Revo STX in my hands last week and, quite frankly, it turned me on a little. I'm reading nothing less than stellar reviews on the STX too. So it's sort of a monkeywrench in my plan. (If all my problems were so "difficult".) Just wondering what folks thought about these 2 lines?
