I only fish from a kayak and a depending on what kind of fishing you are looking to do a rod holder is not necessary. I fished a whole season without one with no issues and I did my fair share of trolling. My new Kayak does have a rold holder so I have already used it more and in many cases I have used it to hold the rod while I paddled to where I needed to be. Good Luck!
