Carolina spinning rig? Your thoughts...
I am going with the heavy spinning rod... I think I get a better feel for the bottom with the spinning rod and it seems easier to set the hook on a deep fish (> 5feet) with a spinning setup. Thanks for all the input guys.

Carolina spinning rig? Your thoughts...
My current Carolina rig setup is a 7 1/2' MH baitcasting setup. I am considering converting to a spinning rig for this fishing. I've got a 7 1/2' MH Snook rod that I can easily convert. Intuitively, it seems like the spinning rod might be better suited for C-rigging....I can cast the spinning rod further (especially with longer leaders) and the ergonomics of the spinning setup seem better suited to working deeper baits. Growing up I fished Walleye in Minnesota. 80% of the time we would fish a C-rig type setup (Lindy Rig) and it is always done with spinning gear. All my saltwater setups are spinning rigs. I don't do a lot of Carolina Rig fishing, but I plan on doing more of it. It seems like the spinning rig might be a better choice for this fishing. Would love to hear from people who do more C-rig fishing and get their insight... Thanks!

Lake Okeechobee is HOT!
I fished the NW side this morning. I did well early. Caught ~a dozen before 8:00. Two three pounders and the rest smaller. Bite slowed for me after 8:00. I went out to the outer grass edge later but didn't do much out there (two little ones in ~1.5hrs). Big waves and dirty water. Packed it up about 11:00, catching probably 20 fish. Big thanks to Robert (South Fla) for the tip...I owe ya, bro! EDIT: Congrats gar tracker! 22 pound average is awesome! WOW

Lake Okeechobee is HOT!
I am planning on going out of Okee-Tantie, Wednesday. Forecast right now says 15-20mph east winds. If that remains the same, I might change plans (Alligator Alley or Lox).

I'm definately in. I do have a boat (Hewes Bayfisher) and may have a seat available, depending upon what day we end up doing this.

South Fla, I have seen some monsters out there also. About a month ago I went right over one with the trolling motor that had me do a double take...thought it was a carp at first. I had a double digit bass follow a frog about a month ago also. He left a wake about 6" tall...it was a calm clear morning and I could see him perfectly. My brother in law has a 9.5lber from Lox. I've been in the boat with George Welcome three times and have heard first-hand the story of the 20lber from Lox. Speaking of "monsters"...yesterday morning the current was going pretty good in my first spot. There were big tarpon swirling all around me. I was surprised...I've fished Lox alot and I've never seen a tarpon out there. I had my saltwater stuff with me (was at Flamingo two weeks ago) and tried hooking a couple but no luck.

I went out in the morning yesterday (6:30-10:30). Pretty slow day for me...I spent the day trying some new spots and never went into the flats at all. I caught a few fish early morning with frogs/flukes (actually caught one on first cast). Later I ran west toward the pump house, catching a few out there. I ended up catching ~10 with the two biggest being 16". I

I'm going tomorrow and I'll give a report later. If anyone has some general info on the bite out there it would help. Don't have much time to cover water water tomorrow.

lox report
My kids love going to lox. I posted here last november about a trip I took there with my (then) six year old daughter. She had six bass in the boat before I had one. She still reminds me of that trip. I haven't been to lox in over a week, but the trips I've made out there recently have been good. My last four trips have all been 15+ fish with at least one +4lbs. The bigger fish I've caught have been in deeper water. The fish I've caught on the flats have been small.

Lox Sunday 5/2
Went to Lox yesterday. Another decent day. Fished ~6:30 - 12:00. Caught about 20. My buddy and I both got one nice fish (his pictured below). All the big fish came from the same spot. We noticed a bunch of bait fish getting hammered. We ran over there and within a half hour, we had two big ones in the boat and two others dropped off within 10 feet of the boat (one was easily +6lbs). It was pretty neat getting into a "pod" of big bass like that.... Tried five different spots, got fish pretty much at each stop. Frogs were going early morning then we switched up later the afternoon, catching fish on several different presentations. My last four trips out there, I've caught at least 15 fish with at least one 4+. Hope to keep the trend going this Saturday.

Lox Sunday 5/2
Hey Glades. I've got a separate setup now for frogs that has increased my hook up rate a little bit. I've got a 7.0gear ratio, 7'6" MH rod with braided line that is exclusively for fishing frogs. The braid made a big difference for me. My hook rate has improved (maybe 50% now), but still nowhere near the rate with dippers/worms. I was out west past the bend...along the banks early morning, then in the deeper eel grass later in the morning.

Lox Sunday 5/2
Went to Lox Saturday morning. Fished topwater horny toads until about 9:30. Caught four on the frogs with one pretty good one (~3lbs). Switched to worms/skinny dippers and caught another half dozen with one 4lber. Caught a few dinks on flukes after that...left about 11:00 as I had birthday party. Overall not a bad morning...five biggest ~12lbs and two huge mudfish that got the heart going a little bit.

Lox Sunday 5/2
Right on, Glades. In your response to my post Wednesday, you said you were going to throw some frogs out there. Sounds like it worked out for you. I love catching bass on those topwater frogs...for me 1top water frog fish = ~ 5 fish caught any other way. I plan on making a trip out to Lox later this week. Maybe post a roll call later this week, see who's heading out there...

lox 4-19
Went to Lox yesterday. I caught ~15 fish from 9:30-2:30. Tried several spots and caught fish on everything: frogs, dippers, worms, flukes, traps. I got four fish from 9:30-10:30 on frogs which was very encouraging. Size was decent...no monsters yesterday but a half dozen fish 2lbs or bigger.

breakfast at lox
Sounds like a good breakfast...Lox and bagels. I went out Friday morning for about 2 hours. I hit three places and caught multiple fish at each place. Wish I'd had more time...

holiday park 4-4
Congrats, Bruce. I know you were stoked about getting into the KOTG and you did it. No way I could fish it on Easter Sunday...I am going to try and fish the SAFER tourney on 4/24.

new boat-nice fish-great day
I was out Saturday ~2:00 til 7:00. I stayed in the eel grass all day, trying several different areas out around the west bend of the flats. We caught a bunch of fish (~40) but mostly small with maybe 3 or 4 that were 2lbs. Tried frogs, poppers, dippers, buzzbaits, flukes, worms. Caught fish on everything, but 8.5" worms and dippers seemed to do the best. Last two times out I've caught a ton of fish in the eel grass but nothing big...I'm pretty satisified that the big ones have moved on. But it seems you guys have figured that out already...I'm a slow learner apparently.

new boat-nice fish-great day
Bruce, I misspoke in my earlier post...i will be at Lox tomorrow afternoon not Sunday. I imagine you will be fishing the KOTG qualifier Sunday anyway...if so, good luck. Anyway, the boat looks great. I will keep an eye out for it. I've got a white Hewes with a platform. My friend has a yellow Maverick. We'll probably be in the Maverick, tomorrow. Give a holler at me if you see me out there (which is often)

d**n, BB. You've been crushing em lately. Looks like we are fishing the same spot out there... I'll be out there Sunday afternoon, either in a white Hewes or a yellow Maverick (both have poling platforms). Give a holler if you are out there.

LOX ????
Anyone go out yesterday? I went out from ~3:00 -7:00. Caught a bunch of fish (maybe 20) but the size wasn't as good. Got one about three pounds and another about 2.5lbs, and the rest were small. I did catch the biggest chain pickerel I have ever seen. It was 26.5" and looked like it just swallowed about a 12" bass. I don't think it was too far off the state record (picture enclosed). I didn't weigh her...just took a quick picture with the cell phone and put her in the water as she was bleeding a little bit.

LOX ????
I went back out there today. Had the two kids with so I wasn't able to stay too long. I caught about 10 from 11:00to 1:00. One was well over 5lbs. Easily my biggest of the year so far.The size of the fish has been outstanding the past few days. The big girls are slammin. Bocabasser, that second picture is a familiar sight. A houdini colored Skinny Dipper about half way down.

LOX ????
Went to Lox yesterday. Caught about a dozen from 9:30 to 2:30. Size was a little better than it has been...I caught three over 16". No Piggs...still waiting for the big girls to turn on. The one in this picture I think was the biggest. Fun day though. I would have weighed a 5-fish limit ~ 13 pounds yesterday fishing by myself.

Fishing Everglades Holiday Park this Friday
I fished the N/S Miami Canal that Bocabasser is talking about on Saturday. I can confirm what he posted...there is a lot of fish there, but not much for size. I brought my six year old daughter out there on Saturday. That is the perfect place to go with her...alot of wildlife and a ton of small bass. You get a lot of action there which is essential for keeping a six year old's interest level up. You can get into some bigger fish, running west through the weir (careful...shallow) and working frogs/worms along the E/W canals there.
