  1. Thanks for the explanation roadwarrior. Most companies use a pretty logical system. I should have tried just a bit harder and I would have figured it out.
  2. Thats VERY dissapointing. Right after Christmas I ordered the Legend Tournament Bass Spinning rod 6'9" ml xf from gander mtn on sale with some Christmas gift cards and they were not able to fulfill my order. I've been looking for a good deal since when I found these Loomis rods on sale from gander mtn and thought it might be similar to the LTB at a slightly better price. Oh well, hope I like the loomis better than I would have like the LTB. I wont be able to compare so it doesn't matter.
  3. Ordered the Loomis because the price seemed too good to pass up on a well respected rod. I'm going to have to test it in the river for walleye until the ice melts away. Might not be long the way this winter has been.
  4. I am looking at the SJR782. I dont really understand the numbering system for g loomis and the website wasn't very helpful. I've never bought a loomis and rarely look at them because of the costs. I found this on sale new online for a little less than the equivalent sc avid. I like throwing jerkbaits and spinnerbaits most of the time so that will be a good fit. Would you say the power is the same as the avid?
  5. If you had the option between these two in a 6'6" Medium Fast for the exact same price which one would you get and what would you use it for. I know they should both be pretty good all around rods. Is one better for certain techniques than the other?
  6. I also noticed the guides, especially the stripper guide, are smaller. I hope that it wont impact casting distance since I'd like to use it for jerkbaits. I don't think it will have much impact on skipping docks since I dont skip from very far away. It may help with drop shotting since it is a "vertical jigging" rod. I ordered one but will have to wait to use it for a few months.
  7. Both are great so I don't think you can go wrong. I did have a rubber part break on my saros though that caused it to bind up bad until I removed it. I have three quantum energy reels and they have worked great. Really like the magnetic bail that quantum uses instead of a spring because the bail doesn't snap close mid casts nearly as often.
  8. Where is the balance point supposed to be to make it feel weightless on a spinning rod. I hold the rod so the reel seat is between my ring finger and pinky fingers. Should that be the balance point or should it be under my pointer finger where most of my rod control comes from, or even further up the rod?
  9. Took a quick look at these today and have been thinking about them ever since. I know its basically a premier or mojo because of the scII blank, and similar guides, also made in Mexico. But the handle was very comfortable compared to the mojo and new split grip premiers. I have the "wacky" mojo and my index finger is always trying to find a good spot to rest since it is usually right on the edge of the cork grip. Good wacky rod but bad grip design for jerkbaits and others. The eyecon gives you a few more options in spinning rods and I am thinking the 6'3" m xf would be a great jerkbait and senko skipping rod. Has anyone else tired this yet?
  10. I agree. Thought about trying it but too few people really like it so I will stick with spiderwire, which nobody ever mentions but I have always been satisfied with it.
  11. I did get a look at a couple of the spinning rods and want to like them, but after reading some previous posts on here I am a little nervous. I had read about misaligned guides and I did see a couple just off line. Also, the stripper guides on both rods were tilted slightly, in opposite directions, and although minor it was obvious next to the rack of mojo's, avids, and premiers. They only had the medium action, extra fast I believe, and right now I'm looking for a ml xf. I am almost set on the Avid ml xf mainly for drop shotting, but the rage guides and exposed blank around the reel seat make me wonder if it wouldn't be a bit more sensitive since they are both scIII blanks. The reel seat was comfortable enough for me and as I held it I could touch the blank above the reel. With a lot of positive posts on the shimano rods I'd like to wait and see the new crucials before buying anything.
  12. I have to recommend anything other than the excellor. I picked one up last year cheap since they were coming out with a new version, 2 actually. I had high hopes from lots of good reviews. It does reel nice, but feels a little cheap, not a problem. But in less than a year of moderate use the anti-reverse is just starting to slip at times. A quarter turn to a full turn backwards which I cant stand when setting the hook. I have a saros also that I liked but a rubber gasket or something like that broke and would bind up the reel on the retrieve. I've since removed it but most likely it was to keep dirt and water out. Some good deals on Quantum catalysts and energy's for around 100bucks or less. Dont have to deal with salt issues so sorry if I recommend something that wont work for you.
  13. I go with the x-rap over the husky jerks. Better erratic action and they come with a feathered treble. I like the clown color the most, especially size 8, as a good numbers lure here in michigan.
  14. I've been using spiderwire 100% fluro since last year because I found a bunch on clearance at my local Gander Mountain. It was too good a deal to pass up. I've been using 6 and 8 lb on my spinning rods and 10 and 12 on my baitcasters. I've been happy with it, especially for the price I paid, around 3 bucks instead of 20 per spool. I've only tried Berkly vanish and trilene 100% fluro, but it seems to be nearly as good as the 100% trilene. Happy enough with it that I picked up a few more spools this year for 10 bucks at another store.
  15. I have a couple Mojo Rods, 6-9 M XF Wacky Spinning rod, and 7' H Frog/Slop baitcasting rod. I also picked up a 6'6" MH Spinning Veritas this winter but I've only used it once so far. I really like the Wacky Mojo rod for fishing senkos and some other baits. Quite sensitive and great for the technique. I dont like the Frog/slop Mojo at all for frog fishing though. Like mentioned earlier, its thick and heavy and too stiff in my opinion to make the frogs work properly, which is why I bought the Veritas MH. So far the Veritas seems nice and sensitive, plus it feels so light. Sensitivity wise both are about the same. I hope the veritas will be a bit more durable like they've been advertising it to be, that would be nice.
  16. I used a squad minnow in ghost minnow color last year as my go to jerkbait all year over pointers and x-raps.
  17. I was just wondering if this is supposed to be more effective as a jerkbait like an x-rap or with a steady retrieve? Has anyone used one yet? I've got a few months before I can use mine and find out for myself.
  18. Since you seem to like longer rods and are going to be using braid with a leader I'd say the 7' M F should be your best bet in a veritas for the senkos and tubes. I would get the 6'6" M XF for myself though. But that's because I have the 6'8" Mojo "wacky" which is a M XF and really like it for senkos. Also, bass over 5 pounds are a rarity for me here in Michigan, but if you catch them over 5 pounds often then maybe the MH rod is a better choice.
  19. Well I took a more serious look today and compared it to equal sized st. croix premier and avid rods, and again the 7' mojo and decided to buy the veritas. Thanks for all the advice. Winter can end now. Maybe I'll try it ice fishing for panfish to test the sensitivity ;D.
  20. T-rage, I understand the length difference will offset the weights some and I would have compared the same lengths if they were available at the store, but the mojo only comes in a 7' MH and they didn't have the 7' MH veritas to compare, only the 6'6". Even so, I predict the 7' veritas to still be noticeably lighter and I'd probably get the 6'6" anyway. I dont care for the white rod myself but color never stopped me from buying a rod or reel because the fish dont care.
  21. Thanks for all the replies. Now would anybody compare the Veritas to a St. Croix Avid series rod or for almost twice as much is the Avid still a better rod?
  22. I've been reading all the posts lately about how great the veritas rods are. I looked at them a month ago and they seemed alright. I took another look at them this week and tried to compare them to the st. croix mojo while shopping with my 1 year old, not an easy task. I must say that I was more impressed than when I first looked at them. I was looking at the 6'6" MH Veritas spinning rod and the 7' MH Mojo rod and the Veritas was very light and comfortable feeling. Rod actions seemed similar in both but the Mojo rod blank is much thicker at the base. I have a Mojo "wacky" spinning rod and really like it but the Veritas may have won me over. I'm not sure if the Shimano sustain 4000 reel I have will be too heavy for it though? Also, does the screw and large nut become uncomfortable after fishing with it all day??? Otherwise I think I'm sold on trying one for next year.
  23. I have the St. Croix Mojo "senko" rod, its 6'8" medium with an extra fast tip and I have been very happy fishing mostly senkos with it. At $100 it would allow you many choices of reels to add to it. I just bought my first Avid series rod but didn't get a chance to use it before winter, but I would expect the 6'8" m x/f in that series to be an outstanding senko rod like others have suggested.
  24. Unless you are fishing the great lakes or lake st. clair, walleye fishing is closed also. So you'd better not have anything big tied on or it will be pretty obvious to the DNR that you aren't panfishing.
  25. I thought that was pretty well written as well. I'm slowly making the transition to baitcasters from spinning reels and am getting some confidence but will still leave the baitcasters alone most of the time. I might have to try cutting back on the mechanical brakes and not casting as hard as I do with the spinning rods to see if that helps. My big problem is casting accuracy with the baitcasters. They still feel awkward and I'll end up with some casts missing the target by 10 yards to the right or left. For spinning reels, you can slowly cup the line as your are casting so the line is slapping your palm and fingers to try to improve casting accurracy when you are about to overshot your target. Closing the bail always snaps the lure back at you or breaks your line! But cupping the line, almost like an extra rod guide right up close to your reel will improve your control. You can cup the line tighter if you need to slow it down quicker.
