improving fish populations?
The river I fish in has a very small Pop of smallies around 45 per mile, they say there was a drop but in recent years there haven't been any drops but no increase either, big smallmouths are very rare I managed to catch a 3 pound in 07 which my dad and uncle said they never caught or knew any one any who caught smallies close to that (although there have been reports of 5lb smallmouth in the river). I think its kind of sad cause there really fun to catch.

nova weather.
It hasn't been cool around here, its usually hot for this time of year avg of about 82-85 peaking into the 90s should be around 50-mid 60s been praying for cool weather for fishing tried of hot weather. I wouldn't really put all the blame on VDot most of it goes toward the Gov for cutting funds, in turn Vdot is highing (if I understand it right) contractors which took over a lot of the areas Vdot use to work and there doing a horrible job and most of the Vdot workers have and are being laid off.

Lake Chesdin?
At nigth The pier near the dam is good for Cat fishing, usually no one stays around after dark at least in the late summer/fall, the station across the lake is noisy as hell though. I've heard the back side of the dam has some huge cats as well but I have no clue how you get to it. If you never been to the nottoway river you should try it, the river is a lot of fun with the exception of it either being to high or to low. It has a bunch of different types of fish, all of the sunfish redears, pumpkin seed, warmouth, etc crappie, largemouth, smallmouth, Rockbass, Roanokebass, walleye, Gar, perch, pickerel, all cats, carp, bowfin, shad, the list goes on you never know what your going to pull out.

Lake Chesdin, Virginia
Been trying to make it out to the Pier on the Dam, I imagine it shouldn't be to low there? if it is I'm not going to bother its bad enough fishing off the Pier as is really wish they would keep some of the bank cleared off.

**UPDATE** VA - smallmouth wade
Nice Smallies I love catching them, the last year I went fishing 07 I caught a 3 pound small mouth in nottoway river near some rapids that was fun my reel actually broke off and I ended up jumping in after him when he got close to the bank lol. They put up a better fight then any other bass I've seen even better since this one was in the rapids.

Removing hooks from weird places
Same here I hate hooking them in the eye, gills and the vein in there mouth. Just the other day I was trying to catch some blue gill and hooked the only 2 I caught in the eye, I ended up cutting the hooks out. I also manage to snag a lot of bluegill right in the back, very rare does it happen to a bass but this summer I actually got one right in the stomach it didn't kill him least not while I was there. Oh and I manage to always hook myself nearly always have sore thumbs, fingers and hands lol.

Hello from Southern Virginia
Hello, I started fishing more this year because I hadn't fished in nearly 3 years not that I didn't want to but most people I know like to hunt and dread fishing which is opposite for me (fishing by yourself isnt as fun). I promised myself to go fishing more which I did stick to my word, I fished more this summer then in my whole life lol even in poor down rain/thunder to 101 degree weather, I've learned a lot in just a few months so I came here to learn even more! Trying to find new fishing holes around my area, I hate driving so I stick close to the waters in the area a few ponds, lake Chesdin, Notoway river. Just checked out Nottoway Lake (or lee lake) no luck I did catch a snapping turtle if that counts. I went to a place today I haven't been since I was a kid Stoney Creek, actually found out its just a small walk from were I work and 2 of my Fav ponds (nothing big but I caught some pretty Redbreast sunfish there). Nottoway would have to be my Fav fishing spot the river is very diversified as well as its species of fish.
