I am a college student at Univ. of Tenn. (knoxville) and throughout my entire life i've always enjoyed fishing. It was around this time last year that I really fell in love with it and started devoting a lot of my time in honing my fishing skills. At the time, I was generally fishing for Crappie and had lots of success bobber fishing off the bank.
Well this year I've been determined to actually use all of the things in my tackle box, which means; i've got and learn all the different techniques in fishing them. I started off using grubs and trying different colors doing the typical cast out and reel back in, successfully, I began catching decent sized Crappie and Bass. However, I felt like bobber/grub fishing really wasn't FISHING (as in; with one technique im letting live bait do all the work and the other was just cast and reel).
Two days ago (April 7th) I just finished my 2 hour mechanics test and decided to search on how to worm fish. Needless to say, I didn't really pay attention to teachers in the rest of my classes and engulfed myself with articles from this website on the gear/tackle/technique of worm fishing. As soon as I got out of class 1pm I picked up my friend and headed to the bait shop buying 4 dozen minnows, 3/0 hooks, and a set of slip sinkers. Finally, we get to our secret fishin spot on an absolutely beautiful day.
We were absolutely killin' it! Literally catching either a crappie/striped bass/largemouth every single cast on minnows (we also noticed that we were catching a LOT of 1-2lb bass and knew there were bigger ones). It was just way too easy...so i decided to set up my worm fishing rig. I went with the Texas Rig and tied it up exactly how it was shown/written on this website. At first, I was really struggling on just getting a good feel and rhythm of this new technique and decided to go back to the minnows while the gettin' was good.
Soon it was getting to be late in the afternoon and low on minnows so it was back to the worm fishing for me (my friend used grubs/spinnerbait instead). We scouted out this area that was scattered with rock flats and tree stumps. I began workin the worm and started to feel good about what I was doing. After a few more casts I felt a hit...I put my rod tip down and set the hook! I couldn't believe I actually caught a roughly 2lb bass on a plastic worm! At this point im totally stoked that everything I learned from here lead me to catch a nice bass.
I was filled with so much confidence knowing that I could actually do this. I moved down the bank a little bit and noticed a massive stump, naturally I tossed my worm in and continued working in that general area to see if I can get myself another one.
Then it happened...I felt a massive hit. BAM! My rod automatically bent straight down and originally thought I was hung, however I kept reeling in and eventually saw the shiny body of this HUGE bass as it reached the surface!
I automatically began screaming "OHH MYY GODDDDD!! OHHH MY GOD I CANT BELIEVE IT! OHH MY GOD!". My friend saw the splash in the water and immediately started barging through thick bush snapping limbs and throwing his rod off to the side all the while screaming "DONT LOSE IT ERIC! HANG ON! DONT LOSE IT IM COMING!". I get this fish up to the bank and pull it out of the water. YESSSS!!!!! I'm doin every YAY and WHOO I could think of. It was simply amazing. Here she is
I couldn't believe it...I did it!!! My legs were shaking while taking a picture with this monster because of all the adrenaline I had pumping. I had never experienced such an amazing rush before. After taking all the pictures and admiring what I caught...I bent down and let the fish go.
Wow! What an awesome day. I truly felt like I was a fisherman. I figured I should get on here and let you guys know that your great tips/advice lead me to have a moment I certainly will never forget. Thank you everyone that contributes to this site! I hope everyone will enjoy this read and rehash their first monster bass!
Thanks!!
