Bam On The Water: Search For Smallies
Bass Angler Magazine’s Editor-in-Chief Mark Lassagne met up with Bass Guide Aaron Lesieur for some small mouth fishing on the California Delta. “August is usually great time for smallies on the Delta the water is warm; but not too hot because it’s a river and the water is usually pretty clear, which makes for better fishing,” remarked Lassagne. They hit the water early Wednesday morning, launching out of Vieira’s Resort with plans to fish the Sacramento River towards Walnut Grove and hop on over to Steamboat Slough. if the bite was slow. They had high hopes and said, “We’re anticipating a good day.” The hit the Delta jackpot in numbers; but weren’t bowled over with size revealing they found “quantity over quality”. The fishermen’s report continued with this information: Finding Crawfish About half the ones we got were spitting up small crawfish, as they were being reeled, even the very small ones. The crawfish looked to be about 1 to 1 ½-inches long, and about the same color as a crystal craw speed trap, brownish-orange. Even though they were also spitting up the same color crawfish, all the fish over 2-lbs were caught on a Revenge deep runner ½-oz spinnerbait in silver with chrome blades Maybe, they were tired of crawfish and wanted a little variety. We saw a lot of bait fish, small minnows, mostly about 1-inch long; however, a couple laces had bigger minnows or shad and we did not catch any fish where there was bigger bait. Bigger Fish All the better fish came from deeper water 8 to20-ft slow rolling the spinnerbait. We got about 15 fish on it, 15 to 20 more on a 5-inch, watermelon red Senko and about 15 on a crankbait. Most of the crankbait fish were caught on a Jackall MC60 MR in crayfish color. A few were caught on a speedtrap and a couple on a Radar 10, all crayfish color. Tide The tide was incoming all day so the water was moving slow pushing the better fish out deep and suspending. The bite was better with fast water and move shallower too. Wrap Up Throughout the day we had hundreds of bites and many times you’d see fish nipping at your bait while reeling it in, not always small ones nipping; a couple of times I’d see a 3-lb’r bumping the bait all the while thinking it’s a 6-incher. With every good fish we caught, there was another one following it, the same size or bigger. Check out more about BAM http://www.bassanglermag.com/

Bam's Guess The Frog Winner
John Warren claimed the Snag Proof trio of Bobby's Perfect, Bobby's Perfect Buzz and the Phat Frog in the Bass Angler Magazine's "Guess the Frog" contest. Warren recently received his prize package and gave them a try on the California Delta. He sent in the picture of the 4.74 that he got using his new Tweety frog. He stated, "I caught one other small one at dark and my buddy had a few blow-ups on the white buzzfrog." After his trip out with Tweety, Warren said, "I plan on keeping and using the Snag Proof frogs; but I think my partner laid claim to the buzz frog." The frog fish he caught this weekend rivaled his biggest Snag Proof frog fish which was just under 5-lbs and came from the Delta. Beginning his fishing days as an infant, Warren's first trip out was in the company of his parents as a 10-day-old baby, in pursuit of catfish. He fished his first tournaments as a teenager in the old Gridley Bass-Thrashers Club. He grew up fishing Oroville and Shasta; but stated, "I love the Delta, Clear Lake and Berryessa. His shared that his PB came out of Berryessa and weighed in at 13.80. He claimed the double-digit, two years ago with one of his favorite techniques, the drop shot. Warren didn't compete in this year's frog tournament; although, he hopes to next year. The 2011 Snag Proof Open was won by the team of Dan Wells and Ron Howe. Prior to his win, Dan Wells gave frog fish tips in an article for BAM. Bass Seeing Bait Color
Hi! If you're interested in how bass see, we have a complete article coming up in the Winter issue of Bass Angler Magazine ( www.bassanglermag.com ) that I think anglers of any level can use as a resource for years to come. Here is a short exert: Humans see frequencies ranging from 390 nanometers (violet) to 750 nanometers (red) (known as the visible light spectrum) and bass see frequencies ranging from 400nm to 700nm. Frequencies outside the visible light spectrum include high frequency ultra violet light, x-rays, and gamma rays and low frequency radio waves, microwaves, and infrared waves. A light wave contains all of the colors of the visible light spectrum (white light) and once it hits an object, certain wavelengths are either reflected or absorbed. There are many more useful articles and I hope you'll subscribe or pick up an issue and SEE what we ate really about. Thanks Mark Editor-in-Chief
