    I'm curious what you ended up with. I have a Fenwick 8'6" rod that I used from shore with a bait casting reel for salmon up in Alaska. I'm not a tournament fisherman so I don't have to comply with an 8' rod max. The rod is more than capable but my bass reel is not. I assume you're casting, not trolling the AL rig. Braided line is a must. Let me know what worked for you.
