  1. The president was the reel that sent me to pflueger for good. My Penns were literally falling apart on outings, and my Abu was ok, but started to give me flex issues when landing larger fish like gears mis-aligning. All my reels are now pflueger. The presidents above and 2 supremes, plus a Patriarch. All of them are smooth and trouble free
  2. Lol.... Guess I should have mentioned it is a MH/F rod!
  3. Ill agree to disagree on that one. Ive owned a few ugly sticks... Sorry to say a fiberglass rod with a 3" diameter foam handle will most likely absorb more of the vibration before it reaches your hand than a high modulus rod with a cork handle. That and ugly sticks weigh a metric ton. Like I said, they are VERY strong... But for 30 bucks, you are only going to get so much rod.
  4. The pflueger pres. is a great reel. I believe it is like 10 bucks or so cheaper than the orra. I have 2 presidents in 30 and 35 size, and a pflueger president xt in 35 size.... All 3 even after use feel smoother and more solid than the 2 orras I handled new in store. I, however, have never handled a pro qualifier.
  5. I use a 6' 6" St Croix premier with a pflueger patriarch spinning reel in a 35 size for frogging and bottom fishing setups. I have no issues with power at all.
  6. Ill throw my hat into the ring here. Someone above mentioned ditching your rod for an ugly stick..... Please don't. While they are strong, jig fishing requires sensitivity. You wouldn't feel a bullshark bite on an ugly stick. I would probably stick with flouro or a co-poly like yo-zuri or p-line if you are using this as an all purpose rod. If you do go braid, Suffix 832 is a great line. Just be advised it doesn't really sink the way it is advertised... It barely sinks at all. But if you have a spare spool, keep one with braid and the other with flouro to maximizs your options. As for the rod.. The Avid is a great rod, the St Croix premier in MH is very good too. I use a MH premier with a pflueger patriarch spinning reel and 30 lb. 832 for my frog setup. If I am frogging in heavy slop with no issues with this setup, I am sure you will have no problems jig fishing with a similar one.
  7. Good read!! A real helpful aid when rod shopping
  8. The rage is the same blank as the avid, so I am sure the sensitivity is a non-issue. But for me personally, The crappy guides are a deal breaker. If I am paying 150+ for a rod, it should have aluminum oxide inserts at minimum. I won't plop down that kind of cabbage for lightning rod guides.
  9. I have that exact mojo rod with a 35 size pflueger president xt as my plastics rod. It is a very good rod... Especially for the 100 dollars it cost. That being said, if I didnt have a kid on the way and other bills, I would be fishing the Legend. Beautiful rod. Like others have said, the Avid is an excellent choice. I am waiting to find a 6'8" M/XF Avid for about 155-160 dollars new. I will jump on it because I at least feel like I got a deal good enough to not pass up!
  10. Actually , make that tip x-fast.
  11. Spinning... St Croix legend tournament 6'8" M/F with a 35 size Pflueger Patriarch for the reel.
  12. I cant help with the baitcasting setup, but for spinning, check out the Pflueger Supreme. It is one hell of a reel for 100 dollars. If you want to spend less, look at the Pflueger President. Even the Pflueger Templar (Made for walmart only) is a great value at 50 bucks. As for rods, I use and suggest St. Croix rods all the way.
  13. I am in the minority here, but I use Lunker City Texposer hooks in 3/0 and 4/0 for all my T-rigged plastics. The offset shanks, sharp as a razor tips, and Texposing the hooks have made setting the hook practically effortless. I dont lose many.
  14. Ive done ok... Not high in numbers, but the sizes I have been catching habe made me pretty happy. Nailed 3-4 in the 4-5 lb. Range already as far as LM bass go. The trout fishing has been ok as well.
  15. I fish Aeroflex in Andover and Lake Hopatcong regularly. Both are good spots when you get to know them.
  16. 1 4 lb. LM at aeroflex and 1 dink there Sunday. My buddy hit like 6 pickeral on his swimbaits though.
  17. I am a big fan of Suffix 832 myself. 30 lb. for me.
  18. This happened to me when I recently tore down a used pflueger medalist i picked up. I took it apart to clean and lube it and got a little clicking on reassembly. It turned out the ring gear to worm gear tolerances were off. Luckily I was doing this at work and had access to .001" shims. I created a hole in the center of 5 of them and slipped them over the reel handle attachment shaft so they were between the top of the ring gear and the side cover. When i attached the sidecover, the shims pushed the ring gear down closer to the worm and this corrected my problem.
  19. I hate that... We had jetskiers that kept buzzing us at the largest lake in NJ. They stopped about 30-35 feet away. In anger, my buddy cast his crankbait at them and luckily hit one of them in the head. Too bad the hook didnt grab so we could reel him back to the boat. They got the hint after that and left. Jet skiers are the biggest ****** canoes on earth.
  20. Spinnerbait and plastics- 10 lb. P-line CX Crankbaits and deepwater setup- 12 lb. P-line CX Frogging- 30 lb. Suffix 832 braid
  21. I hear that... I use spinning gear exclusively. My frog rod is a 6' 6" St Croix premier (MH/F) with a 35 size Pflueger Patriarch and 30 lb. Suffix 832. A little heavier than what you are using, but still only 8 lb. Mono diameter. I never worry about breaking off, and never have broken off.
  22. Sweet! If you see 2 guys in a 16' white sea nymph with a mariner engine, that is me. We usually launch from Mt. Arlington.
  23. Monksvill resovoir was slow... I almost slipped into a coma after 5 hours there Saturday. Going to Hopatcong on Friday with my buddy. It is supposed to be around 80 degrees. Here's hoping it picks up!
  24. I caught the 5 lb.er on a 8" zoom lizard in pumpkinseed. Worked so slow I was practically sleeping at the rod when he hit. Every thing else at Aeroflex this year has been on a 1/2 oz. Koppers live target golden shiner, silver with a blue back. Worked relatively slow with the occasionsal pause/jerk of the rod. So far I have bagged a 19" Rainbow, a 16" brown, a couple yellow perch and some pickeral there all on the crank. Funny.
  25. No waste... You started a good beating. Dont let up now!
