I just started bass fishing seriously this year and my first rod and reel was a low profile baitcaster 6.4:1 gear ratio and a 7 ft medium heavy/ fast action rod with 12 lb mono. Low profiles are great to get use to because you can fish with them all day long. I have asked a lot of questions on here too but as others stated there is a ton of articles on here. It can be overwhelming but start in sections. First only read articles on rods and reels and see which ones fit you best. Then look up different types of line that will suit your rod and reel. Then look up different rigs and techniques.

Lol, yeah I have heard that from a lot of people or if the spool would keep spinning and they would have to grab on to the line it would cut them then. Ive tied about 15 or so lines the last two weeks and havent had any problems, lets hope it stays that way.

Thanks for the replies. When I first started using it I would get backlashes because I wasn't use to the small diameter but then I got use to it and I like that I can cast a mile with it. But ive been thinking about switching to heavier # braid or I have heard good things about fluorocarbon but never personally used it.

Alright thanks man I've been having good success with a lil heavier baits with a 4/0 hook. I just bought me some crankbaits as well just some square bill and some lipless ones to get use to. I got sizes anywhere from 1/2 oz, 5/8 oz, 3/4 oz and even 1 oz. Do you think all these weights will perform good on a hvy rod or do you think the 1/2 oz will hurt my ability to get a hook set? Thanks.

Ah alright , thanks for the fast reply. Is there a better type of line you would recommend or do you think it will be alright?

I have an Abu Garcia Revo S reel and an Abu Garciab Veritas Rod and currently using #20 braid. I've been seeing people say braid can mess up rods and reels. My question is, is that regarding cheap rods and reels or will it mess mine up too and what are some things I can do so this doesn't happen. If you recommend a different type of line let me know and also what # for a 7', med-hvy and hvy rod. Thanks.

I went fishing yesterday before it stormed and the day before and has great success with a green pumpkin finesse worm on a texas rig. I sat out there for a few hours just trying to get my technique down. Thanks for the advice. Now its time for me to get my plano tackle boxes filled with some crankbaits and what not.

Thanks for the fast reply, thats exactly what I was looking for. Yeah i just got me an Abu Garcia Revo 3S, and a veritas 7' Hvy rod. Not the most expensive but definitely something to get use too. Also got a few other setups but mainly bigger catfish poles. Another thing i have 15 lb test on the setup i mentioned, how would you personally rig up plastics like a green pumpkin finesse worm? I understand there are other factors to determining what to use but I just want something i can play around with until i get use to using different setups.

Hello everyone, i'm new to this forum and pretty new at bass fishing altogether. I wanted to get some tips and some principles you guys go by. My question is how do I determine what type and size hooks and lures to use for different applications. Like what would you recommend using on a Med-hvy and hvy rods with around 15-20 lb test? So if you could just break down how you guys would do to determine what hook style and size with what size lure and reel. I know its a newbie question but I would like to learn as much as I can. If you need to know more just let me know. Thanks
