Lake Anna Crankbaits
Night fishing out there sounds incredible...would love to do that. Yea i guess I sort of forgot that the main lake gets so crowded with rec boaters inbteween memorial and labor days it's hard to try and fish that deep structure anyway....which is probably why ive never heard of it really being productive!

Lake Anna Crankbaits
skipping docks with shakey heads, senkos or soft jerkbaits is the most consistent pattern i've seen on Anna. sometimes theyre suspended in deeper water off the fronts of docks, and sometimes they can be way back underneath up in shallow water. Definitely want to work the docks if topwater isn't working early and any of your search baits aren't locating fish and getting bit as the sun rises higher. I know cranks and some other moving baits will produce on Anna at times, but the highest percentage shot I think is slowing down and skipping docks. Pay attention to where they are positioning themselves on the docks, because like Sam said, they should be close to the shallows, but often times they will suspend off the front in deeper water or if there is a significant drop off. Have to remember there is a ton of fishing pressure on Anna so I like a slower presentation as the bigger fish tend to be a little finicky...but a lot of them may still be in a post-spawn/feeding up stage and may be in the mood to chase. Never really know until you're out there. Basically I'm just reiterating part of what Sam suggested, but i really like skipping docks on Anna.

everything could change by this weekend, but think yellow perch color combos...PM me if you need any additional details on locations... also, make sure you've studied the tide chart for saturday.

Potomac River
i did pretty well out there last saturday (first day post-cold front) in a tourny burning a spinnerbait in clear water. keyed in on isolated grass patches and made sure i ripped my spinnerbait through them. they were jumping on it after i made contact with the grass. it was overcast and windy most of the day, so it was perfect spinnerbait conditions in my opinion. buzzbait caught a few as well. we were catching about a 2lb average which isn't great, but if you can get on a good, fast pattern like a spinnerbait bite or a lipless crank bite, you should be able to get your limit early then worry about upgrading the rest of the day. culled a couple when i started throwing a weighted t-rigged senko around hard cover early in the afternoon when the sun came out. 3/16oz bullet weight is all the weight you should need.

Any Advice For Fishing The Occoquan Reservoir This Weekend?
May try to get out there this weekend. Has anyone fished after the considerable air temp drops? I would imagine baitfish are starting to push back up...any truth to that?

Any Advice For Fishing The Occoquan Reservoir This Weekend?
That's a great day, especially for August! I think I need to invest in a portable depth finder. I worked all of the spots where they should have been (though we all know they are rarely where they should be!) and don't really have a game plan after that. I think it would be helpful if i could see where those suspended fish are while cruising around or even where theyre concentrating on those points near deeper channels and haunts with some help from the electronics. Ive got a lot more excuses if anyone wants to hear them. Quan, no need to share specifics, but by any chance were you down lake or up lake? I never made it too far out of sight of FH marina...wondering if there are generally more spots holding fish in August down towards the main dam or up towards bull run. Maybe there's no method to the madness though. Looks like it can get much deeper down reservoir.

I was out there today as well. only 2 keepers...had trouble finding them. I tried cranking and c-rigging deep and just couldn't locate any fish. all mine were from drop shotting a finesse worm on isolated cover. no bueno.

carp are weird, so i don't doubt that. but i have definetly seen big bass crushing shad near the surface...not too much last saturday, but earlier in July (my first time out on the res) it was like every other 5 minutes there would be some action near the surface...and definitely bass feeding/breaking because we caught a few on spooks and poppers. I like to keep top water rigged even in the dead of august at high noon just in case...

Any Advice For Fishing The Occoquan Reservoir This Weekend?
Yea, i think any presentation that required you to hurl it out and crank it back to the boat wasn't going to work too well on Saturday. We were fishing soft plastics SLOW. Also, one thing i wanted to mention from my earlier post, after going back to look at my topo map to mark where we were catching fish, i noticed that the creek mouths and subtle points where we caught the biggest fish aren't even really pronounced on the map...so i guess my point would be that you really need to look at your surroundings once you're out there. we tried the Plan A spots that looked really good on paper (after studying the topo map the night before) early in the day, but made note of some of the terrain on land as it sloped into the reservoir as we worked the banks and some great looking laydowns on the PW side, and decided to fish those spots that we had never even known were there by simply looking at the map. INterested to hear how the tourny went yesterday though.

had a solid morning today. we each caught around 5-8 bass each. I had 2 that were in the 3-4# range (one might have been 4+) - caught on the PW side just below the old dam. nothing else over 2#. i'd post pics if I had any idea how, but more importantly, water temp was getting up there, water level looked like it was pretty low, and bass were not in the mood to chase anything. none caught on spinnerbaits or cranks. all on fliiping craws, shakey heads, drop shots with natural colors (water was slightly stained...best clarity though ive ever seen out there). green pumpkin soft plastics with red or purple flake. got pretty breezy at times blowing east down river...biggest fish were caught on points at the mouths of creek channels in about 10-12ft of water I would guess (no depthfider). seemed to us like the key was finding those subtle points (pointing east down river) that jutted out enough into the main lake to catch some of that wind blowing into them...thinking baitfish (although bluegill seemed to be the flavor du jour) were being pushed down around those points. could be a completely different story obviously with yalls tourney tomorrow, quan, but it was a promising result today after a sweltering week. fished from about 6:30-noon.

Northern Virginia (Nova) Fishing Discussion/reports
I always keep a senko ready to go. Texas rigged though, i never fish it whacky style, which i probably hard-headed of me. I just feel like a get most of my strikes when i give it a subtle twitch on slack line about 2-3 seconds after it hits the water (when fish are up shallow). Especially on the edge of grass and weed beds. I have all the terminal tackle to work it whacky style, but am stubborn. I'm heading out to occoquan res on saturday out of FH and will defintely let you all know how we do and if we can key in on any patterns. Quanjig usually has the best insight though so hopefully he can chime in if he gets out there this week or over the weekend. I plan to work the grass beds early on with topwater and spinnerbaits, then try to locate anything we can deep on those main lake points. I think Quanjig alluded to some better water clarity this week with the lack of rain and cloud cover...hopefully that will make things a little easier, but we'll see. Has anyone tried to punch into those grass beds midday when it gets super hot out there?

yes, they defintely sell them at FH marina. I think they're 6 or 7 bucks.

How deep were those fish in the middle? were they holding up in the main river channel? I'm heading back out this coming saturday...but looks like a dry, hot week leading up to the weekend. fishing's going to be tough, especially without proper electronics. we're gonna do our best though.

go to this site and check the forums: http://www.tpfr.org/ mostly geared toward the urban fly fisherman, but even if you only use spinning/casting gear it will give you an idea of some good spots and local knowledge.

Occoquan Reservoir
should probably mention that top water action was awesome from about 6:30-8am (overcast may have prolonged it a little). walking the dog with a popper at the edge of those grass beds and wood cover made it an interesting start. had them blowing up on it every other cast...we missed some, the fish missed some, and we caught some. also worth mentioning that yes they do in fact still sell GEMCO topo maps at the marina.

Occoquan Reservoir
Ended up getting out sunday AM. had a pretty good morning. caught 8, 6 of which came in the first 2 hours. biggest probably 3lb. nothing much smaller than 1lb. Had to throw some deep diving cranks as it got closer to noon...caught a couple decent ones after the morning bite died off probably in 10-12ft of water on the point directly accross main lake from the FH marina. the other late morning bass was on the other main lake point where the one lone dock is also accross from FH marina. He must have been in 8-10ft of water. good confluence of creek channels, main river channel and some shallow water right there accross the main lake from FH. never had any luck on the c-rig though. we were off by noon.
