  3. Don't forget to fish whatever you choose slow and set the hook hard.
  4. +1 to what je1946 posted. My brother is a die-hard frogger. He uses and taught me the same method. He jerks like he is trying to ****** a gator out of the water but ONLY AFTER he feels the rod load up and then reels like his life depends on it. It's all in the rod-heavy with ex-fast tip. Just my .02 Good luck
  5. I personally prefer lizards most of the time. However there are situations( fishing pressure, weather patterns, seasonal patterns) that dictacte other baits on the leader. I have a brother that will only use Flukes most of the time. I have a buddy that will ONLY use a 10" green pumpkin worm.( His stubborness has led to many defeats in my boat). I have used, successfully. a square bill crankbait tied on to a C-Rig in twenty two feet of water when the fish were suspended close to bottom. I have used 10" worms successfully in deep or heavily stained water. I have used six inch worms with lighter line and weights when a more "finesse' approach was needed. My main three rods I have on my deck at all times are my C-Rig, Texas Rig, and Flippin Stick. In that order 90% of the time. I love to C-Rig and exhaustively read articles on the technique. What it basically boils down to is confidence. The ability to "map" the bottom with this rig is awesome. I personally use 3/4 ounce to 1 ounce sinkers with tickers most of the time and braided line. My leader is usually mono, sometimes flouro. You will hear numerous opinions on all the aspects of the C-Rig. I suggest you research it fully, make a sound decision from the input provided and experiment, experiment, experiment, Good luck and have fun!. BTW-you can buy a fairly large jar of the glass beads at Hobby Lobby. I bought a jar about five years ago for around twelve dollars. It's still about half full. There are different colors but I prefer the jar with the black and clear beads.
  6. Well, has the fishing picked up? I noticed on Weather.com the nights are getting a little cooler. Somebody give me some good news. I have high hopes for when I get home in ten days.
  7. The last day I fished was either August 9 or 10. Absolutely no current in the river. The bayou wasnt any good either since the spillway was dry. You are aboslutely correct about the buildup on the bayou. It is especially bad right below the spill way past that first tight curve. Of course, that is not the only place it is that bad. I plan to put in at Gill's Ferry when I get back home. Usually the fishing is better there than below the spillway. It's crowded during duck season though! I dont see a fraction of the barges I used to see on that river. I think they should just open the locks and let her go.
  8. Native brand. They are light and comfortable. Love mine.
  9. I dont know what the deal is. I guess it could be cyclic. Ready for it to be corrected no matter the cause. Although I did hang a big 'ol set of whiskers on the river about a month ago. That was fun. He was spooling off 14lb test like it was nothing. Almost had it in the boat til it broke me off on some rocks. I enjoyed it anyway. I was hoping they would shut the locks down like they were threatening a few months ago. Curious to see what the fishing would be like. My F-I-L used to fish it before they raised it. Said it was awesome.
  10. I hope my directions were ok. Hopefully by the time i get back to the states (13Sep) the fishing will have improved a little. I plan to be on the water somewhere before daylight on the 15th or 16th. Ready for hunting season to start so all the fishing pressure and boat traffic will die down.
  11. I can usually do better than your average joe catching fish on the Ouachita and Bayou D'arbonne. This has been one of the most difficult years I have had in a long time. A friend of mine from Crowville was on the Yucatan a couple of weeks ago and talked to a biologist who was mainly there to see where all the white perch and bass had ran off to. He stayed there four days and only caught bream for the most part. Everyone I have talked to has had a bad year since around March/April. My last good day of fishing was on Caney in April in 14mph winds. Of course I work offshore overseas and only get to fish every other month. Is anyone else having a hard time on the river or d'rbone lake/bayou.?
  12. Cwitherington3-a few months ago, I was in the Monroe WalMart going thru the bargain bait box on the end cap. I was talking to a young man your age who was doing the same thing. I think you said you were originally from South La. We were talking about how challenging the Ouachita is. Are you and him one in the same?
  13. I have fished this river since 1986. It will drive you crazy. The best thing to do is fish all the inside curves. You might catch two on a crank and then have to switch to a t-rigged worm or creature. Nose into the bank and tie off, then parallel cast down the bank, preferrably with the current. I have caught most of my fish that way. I caught seven fish over six pounds Christmas Eve morning from daylight til noon on a Cordell Spot. Most places on the river have two ledges due to the fact the pool stage was two feet lower for some number of years and they raised it for barge traffic ( i think). Fish with a light sinker with a t-rig in slight current. You will catch more little ones than big ones but it will be fun. I will say I have caught fewer fish this year since March on the river than in several years. The only way to halfway figure it out is to stick with it. BTW-The fishing is best when the river is falling, overcast skies and ten pound test ( triple check your drag).
