  1. Looking for a reputable place to send a couple reels for cleaning and tuning. No local places around me, and I'm not as mechanically inclined as I thought to do it myself. Anyone know a reputable companies I can get in touch with?
  2. You can get away with either, normal a seiko weighs around 3/8oz and 99% of either M and MH rods will be rated to cast that weight no problem. To me its a preference, I use an MHF because I only throw 5" senkos and I use a 4/0 which is a pretty sturdy hook. Guys who love that huge hookset might use a medium.
  3. I'm also from RI, what lake are these from? I had no idea any waters had alewife near us at all
  4. Is the scorpion the japanese equivalent of the curado 200?
  5. I've wanted to "super tune" one of my reels for a little while. I've watched all the videos on youtube of people getting 20 second free spools with boca bearings. But is boca the only reputable place to buy decent abec7 bearings? I've found what look like similar bearings from japan on eBay for about half the price. Im not willing to sacrifice quality to save a few extra bucks but I'll save a dollar when i can get a similar product from a different site. Has anyone tried these bearings? Or does anyone know any other reputable bearing brands or retailers to consider?
  6. bassresource, fishingthemidwest, tacklejunky81, scott martins channel, and LakeForkGuy. FTMW is definitely the most entertaining, the rest are pretty much exclusively informative videos.
  7. I bought the accurst pt casting reel 2 years ago, and it was a piece of junk. It barely lasted a season and put a bad taste in my mouth to the quantum brand in general. If its between daiwa and quantum, daiwa is a far superior company with awesome customer service.
  8. As a broke college student I strictly use reels in the 80-130 range and I have all the reels that you've probably heard are "the best" low budget reels but my absolute favorite are the BPS pro qualifier, the Daiwa AIRD, and the Lews speed spool. The bright side is you find these reels on sale all the time. If you have time to wait the Pro Qualifier usually goes on sale in the spring for around $70. I actually recently just bought another Daiwa Aird off ganger mtn because they were running a sale on them.. after coupon codes I purchased the reel and a pack of jig trailers for $46 dollars. Other great reels that I have personally used are the Abu Garcia Orra sx, and the Revo S. To the comments above.. If you can find a used shimano in great condition for $100 I would definitely pick it up but the people who sell them often don't let them go for less than 125-200 and the ones that go for $100 are many years old if you're like me it'll make you a little weary.
  9. Does anyone have any fishing experience on Saranac lake? My uncle has been taking an annual fishing trip there for years and has asked me to go this year. I can't find much information on it online as far as what kind of cover I can expect to be fishing or what parts of it have produced the best in the past. We will be targeting smallmouth and northerns. Any info would be enormously appreciated!
  10. If you're looking for to buy just one rod, go with atleast a 7 foot heavy fast action. You're going to want a fast tip when you're working that frog through vegetation and enough back bone to hammer those thick hooks home. As for fishing buzz baits normally you'd want a MH fast or mod/fast but just go a little softer on the hook set and you'll be fine. Throw 40-65# braid for frogs depending on the conditions you fish and when fishing buzz baits, use a copolymer or mono leader 10-15# it'll give you the forgiveness you're going to be lacking using a heavy action rod. Tight lines!
  11. Can't be all bad, at best it'll keep the fishes metabolism high and they'll keep eating and keep growing faster than if the water was colder. Lakes in the south never freeze and those fish get twice as big as the ones up north. At worst it'll affect the vegetation growth and maybe the spawn will come a little earlier. So spring fishing might be a little more tricky.
  12. Perfect! Thank you!
  13. So earlier this season broke the 3rd guide down from the top of my drop shot rod, I have no experience with tying new rod guides on and don't know what materials I'll need or if they sell a kit. Does anyone know any good how to videos or anything that can help me out?
  14. Try to find pools or somewhere in a bend where there is no current, lmb are lazy if they can stay out of the current they will. If you're fishing muddy water try chartreuse, white, colors to start if nothing hits then go more natural (green pumpkin never fails). For this time of year lipless cranks, spinnerbaits, and jigs will be some of your best options. Good Luck!
  15. Looking to buy a new rod for texas rigs and jigs without breaking the bank, any good suggestions?
  16. So I'm looking for a new baitcaster and I've decided on a less tournament pro, but the more i look at the less expensive less models like the LFS that is $100 cheaper, I'm wondering if the price difference is really worth it. The specs on them are very close and besides the material they're made of I can't really see why there is such a price gap, can someone enlighten me on the difference or if its even worth spending the extra hundred.
  17. Lol, I had this in mind also!
  18. Okay so last summer I got my girlfriend hooked on fishing which awesome, only now she insists on learning how to use a bait caster. So I'm looking for suggestions on the easiest ones to use, without completely breaking the bank because she most likely will get frustrated and go back to using spinning tackle lol I own a bps pro qualifier and thats very easy to use so I'm leaning toward getting her on of those. Any other suggestions? Thanks!
