Never cought a rod but once I set the hook while fishing a fluke and snapped my line. A few minutes later i threw a fluke to the same spot and cought a fish. I was suprised to find a my hook and fluke in it's mouth.

I carry wire cutters to cut the hook itself. I think I saved many fish this way. If the barb is exposed I see no sense in leaving the hook in. Just cut off the barb and back the hook out.
