  1. I have a new Wilderness Ride 115x that I need to car top to my SUV. I need something really low profile or something that will remove quickly for my purposes. My SUV has 20" rims/tires on it and I don't have a whole lot of clearance to the garage door frame as is. If the mount is quickly removable from the factory rack that would be fine but most I have seen install with screws. Most mounts so far that I have looked at don't give you any HxWxL information and I am in a area where there is not much to look at.
  2. Nice fish, I think that one is slightly bigger than the biggest I have ever caught. Mine was on a bug eye with a pork rind trailer with a hook just inside the entrance to the Golden Gate Bridge in SF. We use to drift fish there with lures and live anchovies depending on what they would take on the incoming tides. We have the striper hybrids in many lakes here in AZ. If you go here you will see that since they put them into the lake they have really grown. http://www.wayneswords.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=category&layout=blog&id=81&Itemid=92 I am not sure about right now but recently they had so many in the lake that they were allowing you to take as many home as you could catch trying to control the population. Yep, put a bigger species in the lake and they can take over if you are not careful.
  3. I decided to get the Lowrance Elite-4x HDI Fishfinder with 83/200 455/800 Transom Mount Transducer over a Hummingbird after doing some research. It may even be more than I need for my local smaller lakes but I never know where I will wind up fishing over the years. Again, TNX for the link on the video of the install. I had forgotten that the Kayak came with the console (115x anyway that I ordered) as all I ever saw was a basic 115 some 100 miles away some time ago. That console sure makes the install easy. Now I have to check around locally for a typical 12 v 7 ah battery to power it.
  4. I have fished for many species in my time both in the US and overseas while I was stationed in Germany. But if I were not landlocked in retirement here in AZ I would still be fishing salt water just for the size of the fish available.
  5. I think you guys are just jealous. Oh well, such if life.
  6. Really? I have caught them in warm and very cold waters. They adapt quite well and will eat anything smaller than them.
  7. Striped Bass are Bass and what I grew up fishing for north of SF on salt water. I also fished for Sturgeon. Now we have Stripers as fresh water fish in many lakes today and quite a few here in AZ But they are not part of the personal best for weight and favorite bass. My PB is just under 30# and I like fishing for Stripers. This forum doesn't recognize Stripers as a bass?
  8. TNX for the info. I don't care about mapping or GPS as the waters I will fish are small in the mountains of AZ. But I also realize in looking that many of those features come on units that have DSI that I do want. TNS also for the great video. I had forgot that the kayak that I ordered came with the console and I I only say a Ride one time, a basic model, at a dealer some 100 miles away. That console makes the install rather easy not having to deal with the scupper plugs issue. I am not sure having color is an issue for me but ability to see in the bright sun is.
  9. The 115x with some extra stuff I guess. This is it. http://www.austinkayak.com/products/14603/Wilderness-Systems-Ride-115X-ACK-Angler-Kayak-Elevated-Seat.html
  10. And it appears that the scupper hole mount also for the Lowrance mount will work on the Ride as they are the same size.
  11. I have a new Wilderness Ride Angler 115 coming.
  12. Just curious, I am buying a new Wilderness Ride 115 angler kayak to fish from in the lakes locally. Looking at the Hummingbird website they offer one scupper mount but it's a bit pricey at $100. It would appear to me that the Lowrance model that sells for $40 would work but I am not sure if the transducer from hummingbird will fit on the stock mount or not. Anyone tried it? I guess it's that or just make my own.
  13. I just found a Hummingbird 561 di unit that looks pretty good to me. A new unit apparently as near as I can tell. Large display with high resolution. It's in the $200 range or less from what I can tell
  14. TNX. For the extra money involved it would appear that the DSI is a nice option to have. High resolution is also a must as I can tell it enhances things. So many choices out there.
  15. TNX, interesting about your take on the color display and the sun. But then again many boats have them located in sunny positions so I guess they have to be pretty easy to read in the sun. That Lowrance Elite 4x-HDI you are referring to came up as a highly rated unit somewhere I was looking and I think it was some sort of top ten listing. I may have to take a look at it and the reviews.
  16. I have a fishing kayak and fish lakes in AZ. I read somewhere that a FF is best in a sunny environment if it's B & W (or monochrome) as it's easier to read but I don't know if that's accepted as truth or not. I have looked at several brands and in the lower priced units, say under $250, Hummingbird seems to been quite popular. I would think a 4-5" screen would be plenty size wise. It would appear that the Piranha series would be something I should look at. Any recommendations?
