I may throw the shallow crank bait that I have. I went to walmart after work and got some watermelon red flake senkos, some 3/0 EEG hooks, a strike kind black and blue jig( I assume it's kinda weed less since it has some hard brush like things in front of the hook), and some black and blue chunk tails

Right now I just have a 5" senko on my lews speed spool and I've adjusted the spool tension and then set the mag brake to about 7. If I was going to change baits and say use a spinner bait, do I need to adjust the spool tension again or just the mag brake? Or both or neither?

I've got to go to walmart today to get some senkos and some more worm hooks. I was also, wondering what other baits might be good to buy. Most of the time when I go, I either use a senko or a lizard. I have caught a couple bass on a blue and white shallow crank bait. In my tackle box I've got a buzzbait, a spinnerbait, a topwater torpedo(green top/yellow bottom), topwater devil horses(what my dad calls them), and really I think thats about it. Anything else that would come in handy. My buddy and I are taking his boat out tomorrow and we normally just troll around the edges and throw towards the bank and fish like that. Should I/we be fishing in the open water (I guess like in the middle of the lake/reservoir)?

I think what I've got now is a 1/0 but what I've been reading is that a 3/0 or 4/0 is really good to use.

Off the top of my head I believe what I've been using are 5" senkos and I'm trying to figure out if a g lock or ewg hook is better for senkos? Also, what size? I've got to go buy some tomorrow before I go fishing Thursday hopefully. I need to practice on how to get the senko straight when I put the hook to it. They always come out bunched up.

After wanting a baitcaster I finally bought one today. I got the lews speed spool ($99.99) in 6:4:1 mounted on a diawa Laguna rod. I bought it at a local tackle shop and he put line on it for me at no cost. I brought it home and put a senko on it, I set the mag brake to 0 and tightened the spool tension knob all the way. Then I clicked the thumb bar and slowly backed the spool tension off until it started to fall. It's a fine line between nothing and falling pretty fast. :-) I'm not sure what setting I should set the mag brake to on the side but I put it on about 7 to start off with. Is this a good setting or should I put it on another number? I've Casted it a few times in the front yard (probably looked crazy)(what's this guy fishing for?)and it's smooth as silk and really reels in smooth.

I'm having a hard time deciding. I've got a $25 bass pro gift card so it would drop the price down to like $54.97 but then I would have to pay for shipping and the other hard thing I'm dealing with is holding the reel in my hand. I know its an awesome reel and especially for a beginner like myself from what I've read.

I see on basspro.com that the PQ is on sale for 79.97. I think most stores that end the sale prices in .97 or something odd like that, they are being discontinued. Does anybody know if this is true or am I ASSUMING wrong? I didn't know if they were coming with a newer version or what since this reel has been around for a few years from what I've read.

My manager gave me a Bass pro gift card for my birthday. I had my mind set on a Lew's Speed Spool for $99.99 but BPS doesn't sell Lew's. We just had a local BPS open about an 1-1.5 hours away so I don't know if I would buy instore. I would like to feel the reel I bought but I know the PQ baitcaster gets awesome reviews. I was wondering though, how big or small is it compared to the Lew's Speed Spool? I have held one of those in my hand about a month ago. Lew's has more bearings so I assume its a smoother than the PQ. The guy here at the local shop was gonna get me the Lew's and a 6'6" Diawa rod for around $130. The gift card to BPS is $25. What would you guys do if it was you buying or in my situation.

My next thing is, when I first started thinking about a new baitcaster I was thinking about going lefty since I've always thrown right and reeled left, but since I borrowed his rod/reel and his is a RH I've been switching hands like some do here. I hope I'm not setting my self up for failure.

Does casting with two hands improve accuracy?

I took the side plate off of the reel and saw the brakes but didn't know how to adjust them so I kept them at the setting he had it on. Then I set the spool tension to where the lure drops slowly when the button is pressed. I'm not getting a lot of birds nest which is good and its not (knock on wood) as hard as I was thinking a baitcaster would be. I always heard horror stories of my dad saying they were bad

Since I'm just learning, is a side arm cast used most of the time? I guess what I'm trying to ask is I shouldn't be worrying about overhand casting since most of the time side arm is better for spinners and soft plastics. I do like a shallow crank or atleast the first time I tried it last year I caught a bass

I practiced last night casting my borrowed RH baitcaster. Its a Pfleuger (however you spell it) Templar baitcaster. Not sure how good this one is to be learning on but its what my buddy let me take home and try. I started out casting sidearm and then I tried the one handed cast and I can't to save my life cast very far. It leaves the rod tip and goes almost straight down. Last night I tried the two handed cast and that is a lot easier to me than the one handed. Is that how you are supposed to cast baitcasters, two handed? If I had to guess I was proabably casting about 50 feet or so.

I read a few posts up and brought another question to mind. When putting line on a new or empty baitcaster do you loop the line around the whole spool or do you thread the line through one of the holes on the spool and tie a knot?

I'm sure this isn't right but I've always just tied a regular knot. I don't know if this is good or not. Not sure how to explain it just cross over line and put end through loop and tie knot.

I thought I was going to go with the lews speed spool $99.99 reel but I don't think it has the clicking type. Other reels I've thought about is the daiwa exceler, abu garcia silver max(graphite frame), orra sx, and I think that it. I don't fish but maybe a few times a month but I'm hoping for more this year so I know aluminum frame is better but not sure if graphite would work for me

Good point. I haven't thought about that. So if you don't have the clicker then the adjustment is kinda infinite.

How important is it to you guys that the spool tension knob clicks when it turns. I know you guys are like geez I wish he would buy a reel soon and quit worrying us about stuff. I'm just concerned if the ones that don't click move or unadjust if you hit them or touch it accidently easier than the ones that click. Also I was looking at a video last night that said when you buy a new baitcaster and you are setting it up. The spool tension knob is the first thing you adjust and not the internal or external brake depending which one you have, is this true?

So I just looked at the Lew's website and it says the speed spool is a diecast aluminum. Is that the same as your talking about when you say cast aluminum?

I think I've decided or I want to get the Lew's Speed spool but I'm wondering now if a graphite frame reel will serve me good since I only fish on Saturdays, maybe a few times a month. I don't own a boat and I dont go every weekend. I know Aluminum frames are better and hold up longer but I didn't know and thought I would ask. Really just want to say screw it and go buy the speed spool and ask for forgiveness from the wife. Instead of her saying $100 for just the reel and doesn't come with a rod? :-/

So the Centrifugal is the external one that has like 0-10 or something like that? When I buy one I will want to set that pretty high closer to 10 and then I use the spool tension knob ONLY when changing baits. When I change baits I always have to adjust the spool tension knob, correct?

I'm still debating on which baitcaster and I really want the Lew's Speel Spool for $100 and I keep hearing that the PQ is a dual braking system which is really good. Doesn't the Speed Spool have dual brakes? So what are the brakes? Both have a knob on the side with numbers on them I know that is a brake. The other knob on the opposite side of the reel is the spool tension, is this considered a brake too? When setting up a new baitcaster are these the only two knobs I have to worry about or is there another brake after you take the side plate off?
