I've started using seaguar red label fc in 8#. Love the line and the strength but hate the memory of it.

Start with 6lb or 8lb Stren mono. Stren is what I've used for many years and still use today. Very easy to use and breaking off is pretty rare.

6lb 2oz beauty on a t-rigged Berkley powerbait power grub in salt and pepper.

Pfleuger, Shimano, Dawia, Lews, Okuma, Quantum,etc. Don't know what your price limit is but you can get some nice spinning reels for under $50. Even most cheaper reels can get the job done for awhile until you can afford a better reel.
