  1. this sounds intresting what kind of bobbers you use? i have no bobbers (my son lost them all) is it this kind: http://www.basspro.com/servlet/catalog.TextId?hvarTextId=52867&hvarTarget=search&cmCat=SearchResults or is it this kind http://www.basspro.com/servlet/catalog.TextId?hvarTextId=58062&hvarTarget=search&cmCat=SearchResults im going to try both the jig on bobber and senko on bobber
  2. Im no bass pro but there are so many small indications of what happend. the differance in line, moving boat, scent, and presentation. The way each individual works a bait will be different to the outcome of another person working the same way. 2 Weeks ago i was teaching my wife how to work a booyah jig along some cover, we where using the same rod and reel same line and same lure, she was even holding the rod the same way i was, and still her jig had a different action than mine. Its just how it works i guess. I personally gave up on using anything above 30# on any braid. when i was using spider wire 50 # for almost 2 weeks I was having a hard time landing fish, they didnt even look at anything I offerd. after that i switched to 12# Yo-zuri hybrid and im back to my self again.
  3. Well Been new to fresh water fishing I have rely on others to get my starting point. Some people have shared their secrets with me and helped me alon the way. Now that Im getting my family and friends involved i sharte everything i have learned with them. there are things that you keep to your self, fishing holes, your go to retrive when nothing is bitting, your go to lure ect ect ect. I learn that the hard way a few weeks ago. I found afishing hole 10 min away from where I live, and shared it with a few friends, the fish there where not pressured, they hit anything you throw at them, well somehow the word got out and now the fishing spot flooded with people. Worst thing is that now i have to access the spot by walking 1 mile on the river bank, there is private property between the road and the hole, its a construction site. well now it is corded off with huge sings on it. needless to say the hole is ruined. Next time i will know better and keep it to my self, its not about been greedy or unfriendly but certain things are best left unknown.
  4. Well I think its better for me to say what im good at instead of trying to mention all the stuff I cant or have not learn how to use. Im good with jig's mainly small jig, swimming jigs and feather, bucktail jigs. I suck with everything else, i have caugth 2 fish on small cranks but honestly i have not given them a chance. Spinnerbaits are a joke, I feel like im dranging the bait trying to collect weed samples. senkos are to slow for me, or better yet, Im to impatience for senkos.
  5. in-fisherman and soon bassmaster, My wife got me a 2 year sub. with in-fisherman, I only read one of their Magz, and i was really impressed. I like the fact that it covers every species. I also like NAFC Magz.
  6. well i only have 2 lakes that are worth fishing, canonsburg lake is 15 min away, and there is another lake called virgil run or something like that, that one is 25 min. away. but i have the mon river that is 3 min away, and some small streams that are about 5 min away. There is also a lot of ponds around but i have to find them first and ask permission to fish them.
  7. im not having that problem see, what i did was get my wife into fishing along with her friend now they are both hooked. the only problem is that when i want to have my own alone fishing time i have to sneak out of the house. we both work on projects around the house togheter so we can finish them faster and have time to go fishing.
  8. I Catch and Release around here because the fish are not good to eat, and that is a shame because i have caugth some nice panfish and have seen bass also that would make a nice meal. But the River here in PA is so full of polution is not worth it. I dont like when people get bent over shape about keeping a fish that is withing the legal size. C&R is a good practice, but to achive balance sometimes we need to keep fish, I dont agree in keeping a fish for no reason. Either Eat it, mount it, as long as you make use of it.
  9. I have 2 bad habbits, one I tend to switch hands after casting, I use my left hand to cast but after I cast I switch the rod to my rigth hand and use my left for reel. I know its a bad habbit but it just feels so natural to do it this way. I also tend to rush my casting ending in a snag, lossing lures or spooking the fish.
  10. That is awsome, I am a 4 year marine, server from 1997 until 2001, I got out 3 month after 9/11. Having server and knowing what our boys go thru every day to make sure we can enjoy days like this makes me think that in some way i contributed to making america safer. To all the veterans, thank you for your service guys, and for those who made the ultimate sarcrifice, thank you, you will be not forgoten. Semper Fi
  11. Thanks For the advice j-bass I'm also glad that i found this website, it has a lot of information that has helped me and pointed me in the right direction. I'm going to wait for my next pay cycle and invest in some new tackle, mainly a baitcasting combo and some senkos and hooks to go along with those. I been watching some videos and reading some post here that lead me to belive that senkos are the go to lure for catching fish. But my question is, will senkos only work for bass? or will they work for the panfish you are likely to encounter in a river like the monongahela or allegeny. The reason i dont fish pay lakes or streams is because the mon river is only a walk away and it saves a lot of gas money. Im also a bit new to the area I live in so I don't know where the good spots are at yet. Hopefully with the info in this site and a few more trips to the river I get to land my first bass.
  12. Well after a few weeks of fishing with my son and alone I'm starting to get the hang of fresh water fishing. See I was always a saltwater fisherman, in Puerto Rico all you need is a pole reel and some squid sliced in strips. Cast and wait. The fish usually are more aggressive in the sea so usually they swallow the bait. Needless to say i been having a hard time with the more panicky picky fish you find in fresh water, that and the fact that I am fishing in the Monongahela river here in western PA makes fishing a bit frustrating. I don't own a boat, so all my fishing is done from boat ramps or along the river banks, snags and hang-ups are plentiful adding to the frustration. But today was different. Today I went to a new spot and worked the bank of the river up and down, i like moving instead of sitting in one spot, i used some gulp white minnow but did not get a bite with hem I noticed that they do not jiggle, they are very stiff so I'm pretty much done using them. Then I started using live worms and ended up hanging up 3 times and loosing the bait and hooks. I only had like 20 minutes before I had to call it the day it was starting to get dark. I had one hook left and decided instead of using live bait that I was going to try my luck with a minnow I got on a trip to Gander Mountain. It's called the mimic minnow, it's about an inch big, very small and the head is a weight. I could not get the minnow very far out but I was getting far enough to make a decent presentation, after a few cast between the bank and a sunken coal barge I had a hit, but I did not set the hook good and ended up losing the fish when it surfaced. I was all pumped up so I decided to stay a bit longer and work around the barge. After a few more cast I landed 2 fish, they looked like they where crappie but I'm not sure I have to wait for the pictures to get developed so I can ID them good. Needless to say I'm happy that slowly but surely I'm starting to learn how to fresh water fish. Sure they are no bass but I guess with more practice and better equipment I will be able to land my first bass. Anybody has had good experience with the mimic minnow? I'm starting to favor plastic lures more than live bait but I need to work on my presentation more anybody can recommend lures that will work for the bank fisherman? Would a baitcaster reel work better for casting weightless lures or lures that are light? Currently I only have one spinning rod and reel combo I got from Dick's sporting goods for 19.99, so I know I have to upgrade soon. The River I fish is full of sunken logs, structure and lots of way to loose lures so I'm guessing I have to learn how to set up my lures in a way I wont loose them. Thanks for the help and advice.
