The MINIMUM size of the cranking battery should be the MCA that the outboard motor requires. Once you add electronics, run livewell pumps, lights and other accessories and you fish more than you run the outboard, a larger size is needed with more reserve capacity. With a fishing boat you usually don't run the outboard long enough to even make up for the dischange of starting it, so it needs to serve deep cycle duty also. You car/truck has a larger alternator and recharges the battery quickly and competely in a short time and you don't "normally" sit in your vehicle and run electrical stuff that will run the battery down. Bottom line "BIGGER is better"

If you have a 24V trolling motor and are using the cranking battery for 1/2 of the requirements for the trolling motor, your trolling capacity is the cranking battery. If you have the common 12V trolling motor, then it should only be connected to the larger deep cycle battery and your outboard/ accessories powered by the group 24 cranking battery. The Trim/TIlt is one of the accessories.

Well, like the OMC motors, the Edge is a select speed model and not a variable speed. That means it is not as battery friendly. The composite shaft is a plus if you crash into stuff a lot. Otherwise pretty much the same as any other motor in that catagory.

I don't think I have posted that bass picture before. The one I did post was probably one of the 9# + dinks from Briery Creek. The Briery bass are more photogenic since they tend to be longer than similar bass of the same weight catagory.

For good hook penetation, you need more that just good sharp hooks, you need a line that does not stretch too much, a rod that is not too soft of an action, and a hook diameter and barb that offers the least resistance for penetration that can handle the task. You also need a soft plastic that is not too hard and/or a rigging method that allows for the hook to do its job. For Texas rigging, I use Gamakatsu or Owner offset worm hooks in an appropriate size for the lure and the intended species at a particular location.

Let's see if I can figure out what this is all about. You intentionally stick them with a mean ole sharp hook, pull them from their environment where they cannot survive and you are concerned about how they die? Maybe you should quit fishing, take up knitting -synthetic fibers of course.

Another ICAST unit announced for October. The 598ci HD SI at a MSRP of $899. No ethernet capabiltiy, and a single card slot, much like some other high end 500 series units, but the same screen HD display as the other HD designated models. That will make 5 different models that have Side Imaging, Down Imaging and 2D sonar.

Something you might want to consider if you want a mid sized unit. It was announced at ICAST that the 800 and 900 series units will have LED backlighting for the 2013 model year with no price increase over the present ones that have CCFL backlighting. The sunlight readability has been an issue for some. That will make all the models that have that technology industry wide have the same bright screens. December and January are the announced release dates for the two model series.

This is a screen shot that shows the SI view of a 998c SI unit with the latest software update which removes the data boxes from the left side for that view. The screen size is 8" diagonally and you can use this same one with a 7" diagonal computer view for the 898c SI:

All the Side Imaging units do the same thing. Just the display size is different. The posted images are from the 1198c SI. No matter what brand you get, I would recommend the largest display size you can afford if you want the type of images like this one that shows a left and right scan. Also when multiple views are displayed at the same time a larger screen is better. This is the same tree in the first image I posted. This unit has the 5" diagonal screen and the other one has the 10.4 inch diagonal screen. If you copy the images to your computer and use a picture viewer zoom to get the images the same size as the unit screens, you can see why bigger is better.

Yes, occasionally. January 31 this year was one of those days, never did figure out the pattern to get a bite even though I could see the fish suspended in trees with my electronics. The air temp was 65 and water temp ranged from 43 to 47 degrees. I don't use live bait. That was at the same lake as yesterday.

<p>I took these yesterday for a discussion on another web site. The single tree has algae hanging off it and shows a little of the thermocline temp density that is just forming (the hazy look at the bottom of the creek channel). The double tree is on a creek channel also.

All the Humminbird SIde Imaging units do 2D, Side Imaging and Down Imaging with a single transducer. The Down Imaging view is software generated using the two SI crystals instead of a dedicated crystal like the Lowance HDS with Structure Scan or the Lowrance DSI or Humminbird DI units have. The generated image is not quite as sharp as the dedicated crystal units get, but is quite good. If you get a Side Imaging unit, you won't be using Down Imaging very much, I rarely use Down Imaging or 2D sonar any more. I see all I need to see with Side Imaging except for vertical presentations which requires 2D sonar anyway. I'll look through my snaphots for a Down Imaging snaphot for an example and post it next.

I bass fished yesterday. Of the 30 bass I caught, none were over 5#. The mid-day period was the most productive. I don't have to guess where they are, I find them with my electronics and fish directly for them, sort of like sight fishing. Slow presentations and crankbaits have been the most productive for the past few weeks.

Have you checked the Bass Pro on-line catalog? There are two Elite 4-series units advertized.

SInce I got Humminibird Side Imaging, I have no need for marker bouys. I see where I am fishing, what I am fishing for, while I am fishing. Yes, I use that technology at the bow with a trolling motor mounted SI transducer.
