  1. Well I ended up with a 7'6 MH mod-fast mojo bass. My old rod broke. And bass pro was out of the model I had. Its a lite flippin rod. Definitely stiffer than my old rod which was the 7'1 MH fast jig-bait rod. I took it out for awhile yesterday it casts ok but feels stiffer in the tip. It may not be appropriate for what I'm doing with it.
  2. Well as luck would have it the tip broke off my rod last night. So I headed to bass pro and got another mojo bass. They didn't have the same one I had but I ended up getting a 7'6 MH mod-fast. It says its a lite flipping rod, but I hope it is versatile enough for most things.
  3. Well I went to bass pro and they were out of stock on the same model rod I had. I got a mojo bass 7'6 MH mod-fast. Its a lite flipping rod, but I'm hoping its versatile enough for what I do. I wanted something that could do topwater, chatterbaits, smaller swimbaits, big worms, and my bbz rats
  4. 3 month old st. Croix MH fast rod. I was using a 5/8 lure
  5. I broke the tip off my mojo bass rod last night, not sure what happened but I made a cast and heard a crack and a splash. Lure and rod tip flew away. I had a 20lb mono leader tied to 40lb braid. The mono leader was still attached to the lure looks like it broke off where the knot was. Luckily it was a floater and windy so I got the lure back. This was my first time using a mono leader. I noticed the knot gets hung up on the guides. I used an Albright knot. Could the knot have got hung up and snapped the rod tip off?
  6. Seems tough to find longer rods with MH power, I found a Lew's David Fritts Perfect crank 7'11" MH Moderate-fast for 1/2-3oz baits $80. Would this rod work well for squarebills, chatterbaits, topwater, and maybe some lighter swimbaits? There's also a 7'11" Powell max3d crankbait MH moderate-fast 1/4-2oz baits for $160. Or should I be looking at heavy power rods? It's confusing looking at rod specs.
  7. I agree, I've found the brake setting 6 on my tatula to be the magic one as well. I've got the reel set up right. I did order 40lb suffix. Should make it better. I'm still thinking of that longer rod too.
  8. Thanks, I've got 40lb suffix coming.
  9. Don't wait to set the hook. As soon as they blow up on it pull back and start reeling. You shouldn't need a hard hookset just a firm sweep of the rod will do.
  10. My reel doesn't have centrifugal brakes, only mag Brakes. I have it adjusted properly I believe. Its a Tatula and I generally have the brakes set between 6 and 8 for the most part which is a fairly low setting (it goes up to 20). I typically I do a side cast and I'm pretty darn accurate. I can usually just look right where I want the lure to go and I can hit the spot. I'm starting to think it could be the line giving me trouble. Its not very "good" line It's spiderwire stealthbraid and it is small diameter (20lb) and is already fuzzy from use. I notice it sticks to itself when it come off the spool, maybe this is what is preventing me from doing some really strong casts. If I cast too hard it birds nests. Possibly the line could be the culprit? I started with braid because it's easy to fix the birds nests and it was my first casting reel. I've been thinking about switching to flurocarbon.
  11. Yeah, The braid is only 20lb, reel is only a couple months old. I can cast a 1/2 oz jig a bit further, however I'm throwing topwater lures around 5/8oz like the pompadour jr and whopper plopper right now. There are alot of open banks, but lots of areas with laydowns and brush that I cannot reach on foot, or are across the ponds.
  12. It's a st. croix Mojo bass 7'1" MH fast 3/8-1oz lures
  13. this exactly. I just cant reach these good spots. I guess I could with my spinning reel, but the lure would end up in a tree. There's no control with a spinning reel. Daiwa Tatula
  14. I have braid, but i'm only getting at most a 23-25yd cast with a 5/8oz lure. Is that normal? I can cast harder, but My reel bird nests. If I turn the mag brake up, it wont birdsnest, but it limits the distance. It seems no matter what the mag brake is set at 23-25 yd seems to be my max. Is that normal? If I could get 7-10 yards more it would open up so much more water to me. I've got clear areas to cast from, but there are alot of places that I can't reach that I come maybe 7-10 yeards shy of. I do mostly pond and river fishing.
  15. I'm eyeballing a Daiwa DX 8' medium heavy/ fast rod. I do mostly bank fishing. Would this rod help me launch some baits wayyy out there? I'm throwing mostly topwater, chatterbaits, shallow cranks, swimbaits, and lipless cranks. I find it hard to reach some areas of ponds and small lakes due to heavy brush around the lake/pond. Some areas are just to hard to get to. If I could get some further casts, it would be helpful. The rod says it's made for swimbaits 1-6oz, but the MH action could be suitable for other baits as well right?. Would there be any advantage over my 7'1" Mojo bass rod? I know it will handle heavier lures, but would it cast other lures out further?
  16. This bait is heavier than advertised. My scale reads 1.48oz. Packaging claims it's 1.1oz. Doesn't sound like much but it's noticeable.
  17. I Use 20lb braid, some use 25+lb. I know people will argue not to use braid with trebles but I've never had an issue. I think you need braid because of the way you fish these. I fish close to heavy cover, close to the shoreline, sometimes at night. I don't want to lose the lure in a fallen tree branch or in a clump of algae. If you get snagged on something you need that braid. I've found hooksets are not really needed anyway, the fish are hitting a moving bait and their squirming sets the hook along with continued reeling. Either the fish hook themselves or they missed the lure. In which case if they miss it, stop and give it some twitches, hopefully they hit again. Keep moving to different spots, then backtrack back to where you started, casting parallel to shorelines and in/around heavy cover or structure. I've found if you fish one spot too much, the fish just don't bite. Fish somewhere else and then return 30 minutes later and you'll probably get a hit right away.
  18. Yeah, after the Senko bite died off here in tempe I switched to a lipless and they were all over it, then a couple weeks later they wouldn't bite that. then I moved on to topwater.
  19. Thanks! I've also had good luck ANY time of day with the pompadour canal fishing. I picked up 5 bass last weekend in the afternoon. I throw the lure close to a bridge and let the current pull it under the bridge, then when it exits the other side I start a slow retrieve. I get one first cast almost every time I go out. I'll have to try the worms, maybe I can swim them with a weightless texas rig. I was fishing wacky senkos primarily about 3 months ago and the bass wouldn't touch anything else, then the bite just died off and I wasn't having any luck until I gave topwater a try. Problem is where I fish there is soo much algae that I can only really use a topwater, chatterbait, or maybe a squarebill. Bottom baits just get gunked up. I might have to wait till winter when the algae dies off.
  20. I haven't had and issue with mine rolling. The "wings" on it look alot longer than the crazy crawler from pictures i've seen, possibly that makes it more stable. I've never used the crazy crawler though. Sometimes the line gets tangled in the front treble after a cast and the action doesn't work right but it's rare.
  21. I've got the Jr. and I'm thinking about getting the bigger one.
  22. Well you need some terminal tackle to begin with. Other than that, assorted senkos 5-6", a couple chatterbaits, lipless crank, squarebill crank, jigs, topwater like a popper, frog, whopper plopper or pompadour. If you want to be creative get some creature baits or lizard, maybe a spinnerbait and a jerkbait. I've not had any luck with spinners or jigs where I live. I feel a chatterbait replaces a spinner. I typically don't bother with any lures under 3/8 oz, and I typically don't throw any crankbaits smaller than 2.5". I prefer 4/0 hooks for nearly all bass fishing unless you plan on getting a monster in heavy cover. If you fish primarily deep water get some deep dive cranks. When I was first starting I thought if the lure was too big the bass wouldn't go after it, but I've found even 10" bass will grab a big bait. I've gotten a 10" fish on my 7" rat.
  23. Thought I'd just share how enthusiastic I am about this lure. I got it about 3 weeks ago and it's become my go-to lure. I've got a whopper plopper 90, and the pompadour just gets bit more. With daytime temperatures in Phoenix getting above 100 degrees daily I've been transitioning to night fishing. The pompadour really shines at night. I fish ponds, rivers, and canals here and the Pompadour works in all of them. In fact at night I've found the only lures that work in the river or canal at night is a noisy topwater like the plopper or pompadour. It's heavier than most other topwater lures so it casts really well, and you can roll it slow and it still does it's action, whereas my plopper 90 needs to be run faster to get it's proper action. Anyways, great lure. Thought I'd share my experience.
  24. I never knew this lake was right by my in-laws house. What a tragedy I didn't know about this sooner. I read it's a great bass lake. Anyone Local fish there? What is the bank fishing like? How is the water clarity? Will the bass hit topwater in June? I'm headed there in about a month.
