Caught Smallmouth Warning Others
I DO NOT buy into that theory, at all. The bite may turn off for a variety of reasons, but releasing bass is not one of them.

Favorite Rig
Well, besides live bait, tubes are my most productive baits, but grubs and GYCG Single Tail Hula Grubs are other choices you should use on occasion. In still water the Fat Ika rules. And although soft plastics are my "most productive" artificials, my "favorite" is a suspending jerkbait, hands down. In low light conditions I also recommend the full size Zara Spook and/ or Lucky Craft Sammy.

Man, whenever I have the option of fishing for largemouth or smalljaws, there is never a question in my mind. Congratulations! Sounds like the ticket to me. 8-)

Yo-Zuri Hybrid Question
I fish #6 (11.9 lb, .010" diameter) Hybrid Ultra Soft on my spinning tackle and I use spinning gear EXCLUSIVELY for fishing soft plastics. Besides strength the Ultra Soft has virtually no memory in use, which can be an issue with spinning tackle. On my baitcasters I'm using #12 Hybrid, 19.5 lb test. I think you would be happy with both of these lines.

Its all about the mindset!
Huh? Nice fish. You Cali boys are SOOOOOOOOOOO spoiled... 8-) p.s. Check your scale. It's not often someone posts a weight 30-40% on the LOW side! :

My fiasco of an outing
Well, if it's any consolation, that's a GREAT story. You need to send it to Uncle Homer. p.s. I carry a "man bag" with some little emergency stuff, wallet, watch and keys. I also keep a SPARE KEY in the bag... 8-)

New to Bass fishing!
Welcome aboard! Here is a good place to start: https://bassresource.com/beginner/beginner.html "Pegging" means keeping your sinker from sliding up and down your line. It can be done with a toothpick or rubber insert. In heavy vegetation and sometimes around timber this will reduce snags. However, I rarely peg. Regarding your line: We all have favorites. I'm a big fan of Yo-Zuri Hybrid Ultra Soft, especially on spinning reels. Line memory can be an issue with some lines. Other considerations are strength, stretch, visibility and abrasion resistance. After experimenting with a number of lines, you'll find a couple you like.

Jerkbaits
Jerkbaits are my favorite class of lures. I like to fish them in low light or at night on and around structure. My most productive jerkbait fishing has been on steep sloping, rocky points surrounded by deep water. The challenge is finding a cadence that works, but the key to success is the pause. Allow the bait to come to a COMPLETE pause on slack line between jerks. Fishing at night: http://www.bassresource.com/bass_fishing_forums/YaBB.pl?num=1183121708

There is only one answer to this question: Whatever Fish_Chris uses! 8-) Well, on second thought...You'd have to be NUTS to throw spinning tackle! :

"All-species" lure is a blade: Silver Buddy, Cordell Gay Blade or Little George. Mepp's In-line Spinner or Rooster Tails are other canidates.
