  1. Headed up to the boundary waters in late May 2024. Looking to hookup on some smallies, pike and walleye. What size Kalin's Lunker grub / jig head would be best? Went a couple years ago and absolutely killed the pike on the 4" or 5" , cant remember which I used! Also my jig heads were 1/6oz ned rig heads. Would y'all recommend upsizing to 1/4oz? Or downsizing to 1/8oz? Any precise/specific input would be appreciated. Know this is somewhat finesse fishing and smallmouth are finnicky, advice and brands of specific jig heads would be appreciated! CORRECTION: Pike AND smallies we slayed with the 4" or 5"
  2. Nothing too fancy, a 7' GLoomis Medium-Heavy Fast action. Rated for 1/4oz - 3/4oz
  3. Anyone have any recommendations on what is the best line to use with this reel? Looking at increasing casting distance. Mono or Floro? # test? I'll be mainly throwing 1/4oz jerkbaits.
  4. Just sold my Curado 200K on FB Marketplace after 3 years of use and purchased an MGL150. Looking forward to using it in the spring! The Curado 200K gets pretty finicky and tough to dial in when throwing lures under 1/2oz. I've had other users on this forum say similar things. Hopefully the MGL150 will handle my 1/4oz jerkbaits better
  5. Im assuming you had a lemon, i've had the opposite experience with this reel. A good "set and forget reel." I rarely have to do any adjusting
  6. I will be mainly using Rapala shadow raps, and DT-6s. Maybe an occasional Texas rig. Probably wont be throwing anything heavier than 1/2oz on this setup, but wont go under 1/4oz
  7. Overall thoughts on the Abu Garcia Revo Premier Gen 4 casting reel? Picked one up on Christmas, it was half off at Bass pro (too good to pass up) Gonna pair the reel with a 7' MH fast action rod. Plan on using primarily smaller jerkbaits and cranks with it (3/8oz to 1/2oz). Do you all think the reel will handle these well without too much difficulty? Any recommendation on what line to spool it with?
  8. Thanks for the good feedback guys. I have some options to try here when I go fishing in a couple weeks. In the meantime, I bought an Abu Garcia Revo Premier Gen4 baitcast reel. Got it half off in the fall on a Bass Pro sale. I've heard this reel is better at handle lighter stuff. Hopefully it wont give me any issues chucking my lighter jerkbaits.
  9. I fear you may be right here. I can cast 3/5oz crankbaits all day with no birds nest, good range and no issues whatsoever. However, once I go below that 1/2oz threshold, the reel just gets SO finicky. It just confuses me because on a lot of forums, people actually recommend this reel for lighter jerkbaits and stuff. And like other users in this thread have mentioned, a 3/8oz lure is not objectively a light lure. It leaves me thinking "What am I doing wrong?" I'm going to try that. Going to step down to 12lb Flouro or mono.
  10. Thanks for the feedback guys, some answers to your follow up questions: -Currently I have the reel paired with a 7' GLoomis E6X rod Medium Heavy Fast action. (Previously had it on a moderate action rod, but hated it. The rod was so flimsy, it felt like a pool noodle and I got no sensitivity out of it) -The birds nests seem to happen in the middle of the cast. They sometimes undo themselves during the cast if the cast is long enough. A lot of birds nests happen at the end however. -I have the brakes tuned with 2 centfrig on, and 2 off. The fine tune dial is at about halfway. -I cast sidearm from my right side and have noticed that a lot of my casts seem to go to the "10o'clock" position often (if I am aiming for 12o'clock). The lure just doesn't seem to fly straight and off the tip of the spool. Almost like it is getting pulled left. Way different than my brothers Daiwa Tatula I have used where the line seems to come off the reel seamlessly and the lure always goes right where you wind up pointing the rod tip Let me know any additional thoughts! Thanks guys
  11. Hey guys, asking for some info regarding one of my bass setups. I have a Shimano Curado K (200 size), and I purchased it back in 2018. Overall, the reel is frustrating me a bit. I am pretty experienced with baitcasters, but I just cant dial this thing in. It throws larger cranks good and far, but when I go to 3/8oz jerkbaits, I get birds nests left and right. I'm a little confused because based on reviews im seeing, this reel should be handling these lures fine. I have it paired with 15lb Seaguar Red label, could it possibly be the line? I have to dial it so tight when I cast these lighter lures, I barely get any distance out of it. Also, if there is the slightest bit of wind, forget using this reel at all. Any thoughts here?
  12. Just bought a new Curado K (6.2:1) looking to pair it with the perfect rod and need some advice. The setup will mainly be used for cranking and spinnerbaits, however i want a rod that can still cast texas rigs or brush hogs with ease. Any suggestions? I am looking and the GLoomis E6x series as they have some moderate action rods for around $180. (around $200 is my ideal range). Should i be using a more moderate-fast action for this setup?
