Panfish Tackle Questions
Im familiar with slip bobbers, and this post lead me to do a little more research of my own. So I have one more question. If I use a jig underneath a slip bobber do I have to use a weight underneath the bobber also? I’ve googled it and I figure, from the hook my rig would look something like this: grub trailer on a 1/16 oz jighead > barrel swivel > 1/8 oz egg weight > slip bobber > bead > bobber stop > rod and reel Do I need/should I use the egg weight??

Panfish Tackle Questions
Hey so latelay I’ve been having trouble catching bass just after ice out. Some fellow members have recommended to me to try and target panfish and I might also catch some bass along the way. At this point I’ll be happy to catch anything but I’ve never rigged for panfish. Someone suggested ball head jigs and a grub trailer. My question for you guys is, what setups do you use for panfish?? How do you rig a float with a jig?? What size/kind of jigs do you use? Do you have to balance a float with a jig or does it not matter?? Do you need a float? I’ve NEVER fished specifically for panfish, so please, talk to me like I’m dumb so I get all the details lol. Thanks!

Should I Give Up??
Thanks everyone for the motivation. I’m kinda new to fishing and I’ve really only spent a lot of time on the rivers (but they’re too cold right now and I don’t have a kayak or waders). I should mention I’m fishing from shore and can’t cast to the deepest parts of the lake so I might have to focus on catching panfish or use some shallow water tactics like a few of you have mentioned before. Can any of you offer tackle tips and suggestions for water temps just above freezing??

Should I Give Up??
I threw a Jerkbait today for about an hour and a half. The only Jerkbaits I have are pretty shallow diving jerkbaits and there’s no sign of ANY top water action. So for right now I’ll have to wait until I can get to a store to get some new deeper diving gear.

Should I Give Up??
So I’ve gone out once a day (for at least 3 hours) the last 4 days. All the ponds around me are still partially/totally frozen. For the ones that aren’t totally frozen I’ve been throwing jigs to the deepest spots of the pond, or at least the deepest spots I can cast to and I’ve had no luck at all. Not even a bite. It’s honestly really discouraging and I’m about to hang up my hat and wait until it gets warmer out. It sucks getting all bundled up and standing in the cold snow and wind to just get frustrated. What do you guys think, should I just wait until the water warms??

Number of Casts
Bodies of water thaw starting from the shore. Lol yea, catch and release isn’t a problem. But I need to catch them first before I can release them

Number of Casts
I’m fishing a local pond so the fish are pretty pressured. Here in Northeast Ohio it’s still snowing but the pond I fish is about half thawed. So I fish from the bank, make a cast to the middle of the pond onto the ice, then reel my lure in until it drops off the ice into the water. I let it sink all the way down and then bring it back with a slow retrieve. I figure since the pond is still half frozen all the bass are on or near the bottom, but it seems all my lure choices aren’t working or the bass just aren’t eating. I don’t know if I should bother moving/casting to a shallower area or bother switching lures. Everything I’ve read says cast to the deepest point and go SLOW.

Number of Casts
How many casts do you guys generally give an area before moving on? Say you bring 3 or 4 rods with you, do you try to use them all before moving on to the next spot? How and when do you decide to try a different lure or a different color?? I’m new to lure fishing and I find myself getting stuck throwing one lure over and over again even if im not getting anything on it.

Need a little advice about technique for freshly thawed ponds
So I’m up in Northeast Ohio while I’m home for spring break and I’m having trouble fishing some of the local ponds. Everything is just starting to thaw and the pond I fish is just about half thawed/half ice. I have to fish from the bank and I usually throw a red eye shad lipless crankbait as a search bait but it seems that even my search bait is inefficient. I was out for 2 hours today in the cold and windy snow and not even so much as a bite. I switched to using a ned rig thinking they might prefer a slower presentation but no luck. I also threw a green pumpkin chatter bait for a while and no luck. I was essentially casting to the ice then reeling in and letting my lure drop from the edge of the ice to the bottom where I expect them to be. Planning on going out later this week, can anyone offer any tactics or better lure suggestions so I can catch my first winter bass? If any of you are familiar, I’m fishing the Walter C. Best Wildlife Preserve. It’s got pretty clear water and the shore is shallow for about 5 feet and then has a steep drop off, deep enough that I can’t see the bottom.
