  1. Great advice! Thanks for your input! I don't know why the 4lb really seemed to do something for me that night. Do you have any tip on cadence for dropshot? I try to keep it as still as possible and just keep the line tight. That's been my only method so far. Hm honestly I think it was just abrasion from the fish teeth or structure. But my line snapped so much. It is also incredibly hard to see - the 4lb Invisix that is. I can't recall where every line snap was though. Good tips and thank you for the advice! I see, so mono gives the bait some buoyancy? I didn't realize that!
  2. Hello all, I have recently had much success with dropshotting since all of the fish appear to be at the bottom of the water column here in SoCal harbors. I am bank fishing rocky harbor coastlines in SoCal. I had crazy success one day using 4lb Seaguar Invizx fluoro, I caught a fish or had a bite on nearly every cast. I also snapped my line 5x that night and have never had that happen before...So I am convinced the low test line was the reason for the success, but I can't handle having my line snap that frequently... What combination would you guys make with the given gear I have? My idea was to was to make an ultimate finesse (dropshot/C-rig/ned rig) setup: Daiwa Tatula LT 2500 w/8lb Suffix high-viz braid and 6lb Seaguar Invizx on a 7'0 MXF St. Croix Avid Inshore. My other setup is: (not sure what it is specialized for, but I love this setup!) Shimano Stradic 2500 CI4+ w/10lb Suffix low-viz braid and 8lb Seaguar Invizx on the 7'6 MLF St. Croix Avid Inshore My reel options: Daiwa Tatula LT 2500 Daiwa Tatula LT 4000 Shimano Stradic 2500 CI4+ Shimano Stradic FL 4000 FL Rod Options (all spinning): 7'0 MXF St. Croix Avid Inshore 7'6 MLF St. Croix Avid Inshore 6'8 MLF Legend Tournament Bass* 6'3 MXF Legend Tournament Walleye Series Line Options: Seaguar Invixz 4, 6, and 8 lb (leader) Suffix 8lb high viz or 10lb low-viz green
  3. Jimmy, thanks so much! I definitely have smaller to medium hands (cries inside) . I will look up those Shimanos you mentioned! What lures have you had success with throwing on your setup? I currently have been reading and heard things like "all treble hook applications"...also, crankbaits, chatterbait, and swim jigs. However, I was really curious about swimbaits? Seemed like fun! Also I have a ton of topwater goodies like whopper ploppers I wanted to throw. Also, if you're familiar, Lucky Craft Flash Minnow 110s are the way to go here in SoCal, so I was planning on cranking these? What do you think?
  4. Hi! Yes! It is a huge rod but I realized that - being in SoCal - lakes/ponds are so overfished that Saltwater is my best bet. I caught a mackerel and barracuda from a jetty the other day and had so much fun that I am addicted now. So I am going to prioritize saltwater fishing. I love St. Croix Rods, but the problem is that I am not too good at reel pairing. I also tend to find St. Croix's for good deals so I snag them up even if I don't exactly know how to use them. Right now I own 2 baitcasting reels: 1) SLX XT 7.3 gear ratio 2) 13 Fishing Concept C 7.3 gear ratio I don't know if they have the line capacity for this rod? Do you have a recommendation for a surf-fishing/casting baitcaster? Thanks!
  5. Hey y'all, So I just bought: St. Croix LGC88HM Legend Glass Casting Fishing Rod with IPC Technology, 8-feet 8-inches, Honey Pearl for a nice little deal And I wanted to know if this would be a good rod for swimbait applications since I plan to use it for fishing saltwater such as jetties/surf here on the Southern California shore. Does anyone else know what I could throw with it? Would it be good for luckycrafts?
  6. I see! I actually understood what I actually want is not cranking...rather I want a fishing rod to fish jerkbaits! Do you have a recommendation for jerkbaits?
  7. I am definitely open to both suggests and constructive criticism! Fire away I see! I will send you a PM :). With regard to the Tatula 100...I stupidly thought that a Tatula 150 would be better...Do you mind explaining why the 100 is better than the 150? The crankbait rod is what I wanted so maybe I should get rid of the need to handle "heavy cover" with my baitcaster.
  8. The Premier was the only one I found on sale. After tax and shipping, the rod was about $120. I know the AVID/Legend are better but, again I was trying to go cost-effective on these two setups...But perhaps I'd consider going up to $150. What do you recommend?
  9. I have decided on investing in the BEST two rod/reel combos that will cover the vast majority of my fishing needs/desires when taking into account: 1) Value/price 2) Technique/Fishing Versatility 3) User friendliness These rods will be both: 1) Spinning Medium Fast Action and 2) Baitcasting Medium-Heavy Moderate Action. 1) Spinning 2) Baitcasting: Rod: St. Croix Premier 6'6 Medium Fast Action ($120) Rod: Daiwa Tatula Elite Series 7' Medium-Heavy Moderate Action ($150) [TAEL701MHRB-G] Reel: Daiwa Tatula LT (I own this) Reel: Daiwa Tatula 150 7.3:1 ($100) [TAT150HSL] Purpose: Finesse, Dropshot, lighter tackle for smaller fish Purpose: Crank/Jerkbaits/Frog/Topwater for larger fish in heavier cover What do you guys think? I listed the prices of items I recently purchased (some were on sale). Depending on feedback, I can still return them since they have not been used yet A bit about myself: I am beginner fisherman trying to step up to the intermediate-level. I live in Los Angeles County and fish in these Southern California fresh/salt waters. I only fish from bank, pier/dock, or shore/rock outcropping. No boat access. Questions: Any recommendations on rod size? I opted for a 6'6 medium because I am 5'8 and I didn't want the rod to be too long Should I wait and look for a Fast-Action for the MH Baicaster? I could only find the Elite Series in a Moderate Action for that price. Thanks upfront for all your expert fishing advice!
