Compact Kayak
Everyone here gave solid advice, but I had to try the 8' kayak for myself Pros -Easier to carry/load than a 12' -Requires less storage space than most -Great to get to bank spots not too far of a paddle -Worked great for shallow water Cons -Fine for calm weather, but emergencies/sudden weather changes would be scary -Dynamics were obviously not great What I wasn't expecting -At 27 lbs & 8 ft it was still more of a pain to carry than I thought it would be -Easy to store, but awkwardly takes up space without a designated spot Impression Fine for paddling around in calm conditions, exploring, just getting to spots inaccessible on foot. Not ideal to fish from, obviously not great in wind, or traveling long distances. It worked great for its original intent (access to a specific spot) but not much else. The convenience of portability was easily outweighed by poor performance when treated like a fishing kayak. I ended up flipping mine for a profit, and decided if I buy another, I have to have room for a trailer. I'm still glad I tried it out, thanks to all for your input.

Relocating to SC Looking for Advice
My partner and I are looking to relocate to South Carolina, but we are still comtemplating which area is right for us. We visited family near Lake Wylie and Charleston, but could not get a good feel for the bank fishing. I'm not asking anyone to spot burn, but if someone wouldn't mind sharing their experience to help us make an informed decision, it would be greatly appreciated. It would be nice to avoid making the move and getting stuck with poor fishing. We currently live in coastal NE 10 minutes from the surf, bass lakes, and wild trout streams. I can only assume the fishing spots are much more spread out, and the variety is limited. I have come to terms with the fact that my surfcasting career will soon be over, so if anyone can fill us in on this as well, we would love to hear. Thank you all in advance!

Clear Coat Q from a non-builder
Thanks a lot Chris, much appreciated. A drying wheel I have, but I'll need to find a better epoxy. Hopefully something I can get local. Thanks for the help!

Clear Coat Q from a non-builder
I used sharpie markers with an air compressor since I don't have an air brush, when I applied sally hansen hard as nails the colors bled. I guess I could always try another type of marker or nail polish. Thanks for the help!

Clear Coat Q from a non-builder
Thanks for the input! I know epoxy/metal weld and other chemicals create heat, but I read somewhere if you heat the two parts separately (carefully) you could get a thinner application. I was playing around with it once I got it on the popper, and a few quick shots with the heat gun seemed to give the best results, but there were a few low or bare spots. Thanks again, I'll play around with it some more.

Clear Coat Q from a non-builder
Is there an affordable alternative to 5 min epoxy? I re-painted an old popper and tried epoxy as a cheap clear coat, but I just can't get it right. It lays down pretty thick, and after mixing there is not enough work time to get a smooth/even finish. After thinning it on a heated work surface, and applying direct heat, I just could not get the proper temp. Hard as Nails made the paint run, and it's so thin I suspect it won't be durable enough. I'll probably just use it to avoid spending money, but I'm wondering if there is a $10 option that would provide a smoother, less opaque finish.

Kayak Fishing PFD
I'm seeing a few auto inflate pfds around the $60 price point (from the big box store), anyone have any issues with these?
-
Kayak Fishing PFD
Thanks for the response. Any thoughts on fishing vest style vs auto inflate? Trying to justify the cost, but I probably don't kayak enough for it to pay off.

Kayak Fishing PFD
1) Looking for a worst case scenario PFD, what do you recommend? 2) Does anyone actually wear a Type I? 3) Should I steer clear of the mesh top style vests? Concerned I won't wear an uncomfortable pfd, and a breathable vest won't keep my head above water. Am I overthinking this?

Single Compartment Container
Exactly. Flambeau and Plano produce them in the larger sizes, can't find an equivalent, even with another brand. Meiho comes close but they are deeper so I can't fit 4 of them in my bag. They don't have to be "exact", I'd like them too fit in my bag without loosing too much room for lures. I'll have to try back at Michael's again, but I never thought about Harbor Freight, thank you.

Looking for an open compartment container to replace my flambeau zerust 3003 containers, can't seem to find an option, does it exist?

Reel foot coverage question
-How much should a locking nut and seat cover the feet of a spinning reel? -Anyone care to measure their own and post an dimensions below? -Is there a cutoff point at which you would not use a rod due to insufficient reel foot coverage? Asking because I’m still having a hard time finding reel for my Dobyns fury spinning rod.

Compact Kayak
Normally I'll separate my (cheap) paddle into two parts, and use them like crutches. Doesn't mean a fall can't happen though!

Compact Kayak
I can't recall if it was the 80X or the 100X but I have sat in the smaller pelicans. I was able to fit, but I wasn't in it long enough to get a feel of how it would be after 2 hours. Getting in or out shouldn't be an issue, I'm flexible enough but I get what you're saying. A trailer isn't in my budget, and storage space is most likely going to be limited when I move. I'd love to be able to keep my kayak but it's not going to work. I just don't want to be stuck with bank fishing only.

93 x 28" are the dimensions listed online. I actually had an inflatable kayak (can't remember measurements) but that thing tracked in circles. LOL, I guess I'm nuts.

Compact Kayak
Pelican clipper 80, at 27 lbs you can lift it with one hand and carry it a short distance. I'm well under the max load (for now) and I would bring one rod and a sling bag with me. I have paddled one around a small lake, it wasn't ideal but it worked, but that wasn't for an extended period. Would I like to have a Hobie PA or Jackson? Absolutely, but it's not in the cards for me

Compact Kayak
Was it a dumb question? I'm asking for "fun fishing" purposes. I have a spinal fusion and lifting a 12' yak onto my roof isn't something I want to do anymore. I've only ever owned long kayaks, so I've never really tried it. Thanks!

Is an 8x2' kayak too small to fish from? My 12'er is a pita to lift/store and I don't know that my next living space will have garage/shed storage. Any advice would be appreciated!

Fly rod Dilemma
Orvis Hydros Coldwater Intermediate WF9 40' Head 1.5"/sec To be honest, I should know more about line considering how long I've been fly fishing.
-
Fly rod Dilemma
I'm starting to wonder if I should just practice casting more, or consider trying another line, the 9 wt has been tough for me. I hate using stripping baskets, so that also doesn't help...
-
Fly rod Dilemma
Thanks for that useful info. I probably should have gone with a 5 wt over a 4 considering I don’t always throw size 20 flies consistently. I’ve never used a glass rod, I hear the casting takes some getting used to. Do you prefer glass over standard graphite?

Fly rod Dilemma
Speaking of tired arms, I’m started to get concerned about my shoulder. I don’t have a medical history of issues, but I’m sure the repetition of casting a 9 wt isn’t going to benefit my shoulder. Casting my 4 wt is a breeze, so no concern there, but in the surf a spinning rod seems to be much easier on the body and much more convenient. Does anyone in here use an 8 wt for bass?

Fly rod Dilemma
I have a 9 wt that I use for striped bass, never used it for largemouth, it's only 2 years old and in very good condition. I'm contemplating selling and putting the money towards bass gear, but before I do I wanted to ask some advice. -I will be moving from New England to the Charlotte area, so I really won't be fishing for striper much -Last season I used my spinning rod for stripers and picked up the fly rod once -I suck at casting, kind of want to try a FWF line for use with bass, but I'm not sure I'll stay with it, so why spend the cash -I would put most likely put the money towards a heavy cover rod What do you guys think I should do!? I've invested a lot of money in the rod/fly tying stuff, so I don't want to take too much of a hit, but it's probably better to sell it sooner rather than later. Any advice is greatly appreciated, thanks a lot.
